I'm looking to add a C5 to keep my shark company.been looking at a 2000 m6 coup.(drool)a friend called after i picked one t make an offer on and said he wasn't sure, but he thought he heard some 99 &2000's had some problems. Any input??? My old bb shark is an absolute blast ,but is kind of a pain on big trips,no air or radio and 15mpg on the road.Any input would be appreciated..
I have had very few problems with my 2000 C5 targa, and the problems I've had have been minor and not specific to that year - Column lock and rocking driver seat, both easy repairs and the column luck was a recall fix.
I am at 70k miles now and still going strong. Obviously I don't drive mine daily, but when I do drive her I'm on the go-pedal big time.
I have a 2000 M6 and love it. I've replaced the wheel bearings, done a CLB after the damn thing locked on me, and have a minor rocking seat problem. Up next is an oil pressure sensor relocation and a fix to a small leak in the coolant reservoir. Nothing specific to this year, as I'm aware. It's my daily driver, and I couldn't be happier.
I own a 2000 hardtop, no major problems except for those listed by other members on this thread. Just keep in mind that you are buying a car that is eight years old now - it all depends on the way the previous owner(s) treated it. He or she may have eight years of neglect or eight years of care in to your future baby. Good luck in your search.
I agree with the above: rocking seat, column lock recall, leaky diff.
But they all had these.
But no oil-use issues as reported on some of the '01's.
One major issue with the older C5's was the leaking battery. Of course, a 2000 has a new battery by now, but it would definitely be worthwhile to remove the battery and just look underneath the tray.
If it leaked before it will be obvious. There are two major computers and a hundred wires down there. a potential for untold misery and a couple thousand $$$ in repairs if acid is down there eating up those computers. I had the problem, and it was a nitemare.
I advise to never run a liquid acid battery in a C5 - just too much to risk. Most will never leak, but what if it did? Use a gel or Optima type.
Love my 2000 coupe. Biggest headache is the memory function. FOB will not open drivers door nor will the inside handle unless you manually unlock it. Sometimes seat memory goes bonkers when the key is inserted, will pin me against the steering wheel or lose its memory altogether. No leaks or oil useage probs. Installed CLB kit.
I bought mine new in Oct. of 99. I had the leaking rear diff repaired twice, a power window and a battery under warranty in the first year. Column lock recall but no issues. The only problem since then was a plastic headlight stopper and power brake booster failure and they comped the part and charged me $100 for labor last year. Not bad after 8 years.
Oh, I have a slight rocking seat and an occasional chirping belt syndrome. Neither of which has bugged me enough to do anything about it.

I have 120,000 mi on mine and only suffered the same minor problems. key fob failures, steering locked up, and wires braking under the hood. The one wire that breaks and causes the most problem is the outdoor temp sensor that cotrols the fuel mixture. I drove most of the way through Florida with the computer telling the engine it was -36 degrees outside. Needless to say the car ran very rich for 600 miles.
I have only had my 2000 coupe since August. Put on approx. 8k miles since I purchased. I have had the leaky rear diff issue and have the rocking seat issue. I also notice that the seat memory function is not .err.. perfect! Initially, I was using the "easy entry/exit" feature but it seemed that if I put the key in the seat would "sometimes" move forward but most times not and I would have to press the memory button to have the seat move forward so I could reach the pedals to start it.
Had the seals replaced in the read diff (while there I had all of them replaced).. and for the rocking seat, I have not done anything. Seems that if I do not tilt the seat back, it does not rock, so I just keep it leaning forward ( or flat) via the electric adjusters; and I do not have any issues with comfort with it this way either! For the memory seat issue, I am the only one that drives it and I don't have any issues with exit/entry into the car with the seat in the correct position for driving, so I just turned off the easy entry/exit feature and don't worry about it.
If you find one well maintained (they are out there) I think a 2000 (or any C5 year ) can be a GREAT purchase. Just be a little picky about the car your going to purchase and you should be good to go!
I have a 2000,with the normal things cam,heads,header,4.10 gears. l have over 200 passes down the quarter mile, nothings has ever broke,4,000 miles on the car.
The steering wheel lock thing did happen at 1,000 miles. The dealer repaired it free but down loaded a stock program into the computer, and burned it up.They refused to fix it free.I called maxie price where I bought it and they put in a new computer free.
These cars take a lot of abuse and will keep running.

Your outside temp sensor has nothing to do with your engine A/F ratios. That is handled by the MAF sensor on the engine and the O2 sensors on the exhaust. The only thing that won't work properly with a defective temp sensor is the AC.
