I need so help. My mechanic replaced the water pump and belts in my C5. To turn off the hood light he disconted the battery. After the parts were installed he reconnected the battey and when he starts the car it will run for about 10 sec. and shuts off and has a note on the dash "check column lock". Does anyone have a clue what is going on?
Your car has had the dreded column lock nightmare. It shuts off because as part of a recall chevy retuned your computer to shut down the fuel pressure when the column lock falls.
Thanks guys. I found the car had a recall for this issue which was preformed in 2004. After the recall GM issued a service notice that calls for the various fix items so well outlined in the sticky posting. We are going to try the battery charge first and then if this doesn't work then install the relay/wire bundle. Who would have thought installing a water pump would have these problems.
I had the same issues. If you find yourself stuck and have enough strength, you can move the steering wheel side to side forcefully enough to free the steering wheel. Also, I put in an Optima red top battery and swapped out my #1 key for the #2 key (I have read somewhere the resistor in the key may cause problems), and I have not had a single issue since for about 2 years now. Best of luck.
