Default What is required to install a cam?

I have heard that you need to also purchase Springs and Push rods because the stock ones won't work or will break.
If this is the case, then just the cam, springs, and pushrods are going to run me $750 not including programming ($500 according to MTI) and labor which is going to be no less than $500.... yikes....
This seems very high to me for just a cam install.
I was under the impression that I could get a cam and underdrive pully installed for under $1500.
Is this accurate?
All opinions welcomed....

I installed mine myself and paid only 575 for the cam kit included springs and pushrods. I unfortunately couldn't find an underdrive pulley at the time. I have no tuning, could use it though. Depending on the cam you get, you might not need tuning. Of course, this means a smaller cam and leaving a little hp on the table, but that's a sacrfice we sometimes have to make when on a budget.

Nilla,
regarding your idleing issue's. I have heard that drilling a hole in the throttle body will sometimes resolve this issue. Not sure of how big a hole, but it supposedly does the trick...

Hope this helps and thanks for the response....

I drilled a 5/64ths hole and it works very well... Occasionally the PCM stills gets a little cantankerous, but nothing a little gas pedal won't cure immediately at those times. I think it's multitude of things..I have only removed the stock air box lid and still have stock exhaust. Would more flow help the PCM? I dunno, but it'll be worth a try once I gain employment. I'm almost positive I could have gone with a 212/218 and experienced zero idling problems, but that was just too small for me! :)

Update.... Just talked to Dan at Speedworks. I found that I can have my Cam and UD pully installed for about $1750. That sounds about right. Speed comes with a price.... hahaha I can't wait.....

If it weren't for the steering rack, cam installs on a C5 would be the best bang for the buck. Unfortunately it skews the labor charge and then you have to decide between headers and a cam. But the fbody is so easy to do and 30 ponies for 850 installed is killer BFTB...not too mention, that all it takes to know how to do one, is to participate in one mod fest. It's sooo easy on the LS1!

For sake of comparison, a few weeks ago MTI had a sale, where cam+relatedparts+install alone would be on the order of $1,100, without PCM reprogram. (see http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=179653). The sale is now over, so I don't know what it would cost without sale pricing. The MTI prices did not include a pulley, and I understand that a pulley install is cheap if you do it at the same time as a cam.

On a 6-speed, there's been much discussion of whether the PCM reprogram is required, and it seems like on some cams you can skip it and just drill a hole in the throttle plate.

So, the Speedworks price is on that order, and of course it's closer to you geographically. :)

By the way, does the Speedworks price include a reprogram?

If I lived in Texas, I would drive over to MTI and let them install it. Get a room for 2 days and a rental car and see the sights.
