Default Cam specs for most cam/head users??

Just interested in knowing what cam specs (specifically related to duration and lobe separation) most of you guys with cam/head setups have with your setup. Everyone is basically making 400+RWHP with a stock bottom ends with most tuners cam/head bolt ons but yet there are so many camshafts out there.

Also with the response would like to know if it is with LS1 or LS6 heads.

Thanks to all!!

The 3 most popular MTI cams are:

B1 = .558/.558 221/221 114
T1 = .558/.558 221/221 112
C1 = .566/.566 222/222 112

I'm running the C1 cam (aka "Hammer Cam") with LS1 heads and making 404rwhp/385rwtq.

MattG,
Thats one one the largest cams that I have seen installed in a stock displacement motor! That thing must have one hellava idle! With 112 degree lobe separation and those duration #'s it would be real peaky in power. I see you dyno #'s at peak but want about throughout the rpm band? What kind of compression ratio do you have? Are they LS6 or LS1 heads?

Thanks

It is a pretty large cam but it is amazingly drivable and not peaky in power at all. It has a great torque curve in my opinion. 320rwtq starts at 2000rpm and works its way up to peak at 4700rpm. The HP also peaks at 6250rpm and pulls strong until 6700rpm. I do have a dyno graph but it has not been scanned in or I would post it.

I use the car for daily driving during non-snow months, for autox'ing, roadracing and the odd run down the 1/4.

The compression is 10.7 to 1 and they are ARE Stage II ported LS1 heads with 2.08 / 1.60 valves.

WOW!!! That really is a BIG cam!!! Why did you choose to go with soo much duration? Is your car an auto?

You are making that power with the TTS 1 5/8" headers still?? I switched to the TPIS 1 3/4" from the 1 5/8" and picked up all kinds of power. You would think that a cam with those #'s would like a bigger primary pipe header. I wonder if the 112 centerline helps to keep the MEP (mean effective pressure) up when using a cam with such large int/exh duration degrees?

I went with this cam because i wanted something with a real beefy sounding idle that was great running at all RPM. Nick picked out these cam specs for me. I thought it was a bit big as well at the time but he told me he would put a different one in if I didnt like the performance/drivability of this one. Once it was in the car there was no turning back because I was real happy with its performance and streetability.

As for the TTS headeds, I feel they contribute greatly to the nice torque curve of my engine. I may have given up 5rwhp at peak but I bet I picked up gobs of torque in the lower RPMs, where you can actually feel it. A friend of mine went with this same heads/cam package but had TPIS headers and actually made less power and his low rpms were noticably weaker. Therefore I do not feel like I am missing out on any power because of these headers. However, when I install the 432 in the new year, I will be going with a set of larger tubed headers.

LG Motosports cams

#1 .566/569 222/226 on 112 or 114
#2 .581/572 224/230 on 112 or 114
G-7 cam .612 lift 240 + duration 418ci

Both #1 and #2 produce 425+ rwhp 394 rwtq with Cam, heads and headers.
We still haven't tried our new headers on one, but we will see soon.

All three are split duration cams with a proprietary lobe.

The G-7 puts out 512rwhp @6100 and 497rwtq @ 4500

Wow! Everyone seems to be running BIG cams?!?! Lou how do #1 and #2 idle? Which one do you use for auto cars? Any problems?

What duration/lift does vacuum (such as brakes etc) become an issue on the GEN III motor?

There is a lot more to that equasion than just duration. LSA, seat to seat timing, etc.
We have not gotten that big yet. I will let you know when we get there. :)

No problems with the idle. We use the 114 on the auto cars. The G-7 is the lumpiest idle, but I still drive it every day. We have the idle just above 1000rpm (M6) but the G-7 lobe spread is tight. (I don't want to post the exact #)

If you want a big cam, we use a .740 lift on our 310 cu in small block C5 Trans Am race engine and it puts out right at 600 rwhp@ 8200 rpm (700 flywheel HP) but only 450 rwtq @ 6700 rpm with the small displacement. This is a Bow Tie small block with SB2 heads and an 830 Holley Carb.

I guess I've got one of the mildest cams here: 218/218 Dur, 114 LSA, but still making great power with Morgan MS Stage IIx heads, with 11.4 :1 CR. :yesnod:

I also used the cam Matt has :.. 226/234/554/575/112.. great cam, quite a bit of lope but very driveable and great power characteristics. I miss having that cam in my car.!

I pulled it in October and went with the R1 from MTI..

232/237/560/560/114

too mild after running the ARE cam, I wish I had gone larger. This cam idles like stock almost, very little lope, but needs about 950 to idle consistently.

Next Stop :

575/585, 237/242, 113..

Did you have the ARE cam in the stock bottom end and the MTI cam in the 422? If so, cubes have a big tendency to make a cam much more mild. :)

Yup.. didnt mean to confuse.. I had the ARE cam in my stock bottom end and now the MTI in my 422.. I liked the ARE cam in the stock cubes better than I like the R1 in my 422...

Do you have any dyno reports with that larger cam? I would like to see the power curve on a stock bottom end motor.

Right now I have a MMS 224v3.1 camshaft in my 2001 Z28 , and man its way better than my old 220 112ls camshaft. The specs are 224 224 .578 .578 114ls, with special lobes and advance (I don't know what they are, Mike won't tell.. heheh). This cam idles very well@900rpm, and makes great power from 3000-6400rpm. I've also seen the new MMS 218 camshaft, which can use a stock idle and still makes almost as much as my 224 camshaft. Those of you who are running the older cams, especially those cams that were ground on a 112ls, might want to consider upgrading.
