I got a 1998 6 speed. It's really hard to get the shifter over far enuf to get it in reverse. All the other gears engage great.
I searched the forum last nite and learned that there is a selenoid that prevents you from shifting into reverse as you try to grab 5th.
What tells this selenoid to work under motion as compared to relaxing when standing still?
The more I think about it it seems that it is working against me when trying to get it in reverse.
Sometimes I have to use two hands to get the shifter over far enuf.
I had the fluid in the trans changed with GM Syncromesh Fluid...helped the shifts from 1st-6th out big time. But getting the shifter over enuf for reverse is a bear.
What do you think?
Also..I don't think the antivenom mod would help this out..do you?
I always do that...it doesn't help in this case.
Something is working against the shifter to get it over far enuf for the reverse gate.
Thx though!
Antivenom is indeed the cure for your problem. What you describe is clearly high spring tension on the reverse gate detent. Do the antivenom but do a search on this forum for the one that tells you how to use some 30 cent washers to move the screw out maybe .080 - .100 inch.
That's what I thought..some kind of tension/resistance on the shifter....makes sense.
When I force the shifter OVER far enuf to catch reverse...it goes into reverse no problem.
Thx!!
I gonna try the Mod hopefully this week.
