I am changing my differential from 2:73 gear to 3:42 ratio. I am looking at a ZO6 3:42 differential and it states differential "carrier". This does include the whole differential (bolt on), correct? The GM part # is 12572683.
I'm looking forward to it. I'm installing a 2600 stall convertor as well. I'm hoping to smoke off these dang runflats so I can get the wife to see that I need new tires!
"The GM parts catalog lists part number 12572683 as a 3.42 ratio, differential carrier, to be used only with manual transmissions.
We do not have any way of telling if a part from another vehicle will fit yours properly without modification to the part. Please research parts that did not come on your vehicle from the factory to make sure they will fit your vehicle. No one wants to be stuck with parts that don’t fit due to bad information. "
This differential WILL work with my 2004 C/5, correct? The only thing I will have to do is change the seal plate?

Ok, here's is question for you guys in the same arena...My '99 MM6, came with the GU6 3.42 Axle from the factory. Its not a Z06 ,yet looking in the various GM parts places, no one lists that rear end for my car. Yes, the GU6 3.42 is shown on my build sheet. Thoughts and a part number for it?
All manual trans C5s came with a 3.42 rear end, so whatever GM source you are using for your '99 is incorrect.
Apparently they are all using the same listing source for parts and therefore none show the 3.42 rear end. They do show the 2.73 and 3.15 I think they are, but not the 3.42. I'm wondering if the part number for the Z06 differential is the same for the '99 non-Z06? Anyone know precisely where the part number is on it before I get under there and look?
I'm having a noise that sounds like tires but it isn't. I've verified it isn't in the trans, therefore it leaves the driveshafts and differential. I replaced the hubs already. Its a warbling type sound that is only noticeable at 75mph and above. Since I'm the guy with just a few miles on it..303K, I'm guessing that something is worn out and I don't want to just throw money at it.
I did jack the wheels up and ran it at 80mph...no noise. Not trying to hijack the thread but this is all related to differentials.

my first guess is tires when there is a noise at a certain speed.

Check for a flat spot or uneven wear
I took it down and had the tires rebalanced. Only one was off by 0.75 oz. Due to a no so great alignment, I saw some cupping taking place on the rears therefore had it realigned again. It might be a result of the cupping itself therefore really is the tires. The only way to find out is to buy new tires or swap with someone else for a quick visit to 80mph again. I thought about swapping out with my '07's (Z51) with Supercar tires briefly, but they are an inch larger. Not sure they'll fit.
