OK, when I am braking, typically right before the car stops, I hear this "clunk" sound. At fiirst I was worried because I thought it was something in the transmission. I have since tried to pump the brakes right before the stop and I can get it to "clunk" almost every time.......ONLY at low speeds. It seems to be coming from the right rear somewhere. Could it be a caliper losing grip, a warped rotor, or something more serious like a half shaft or something?
I am going to take it in to the dealer, but I like to have some ammo first! :yesnod:
Thanks! :D
I've never had this problem, but if I did, I think I would jack up the rear and check out every possible mechanical noise possibility. Check the 'U" joints by bloacking one wheel and moving the other to see if there is any unusual play or noise.
You could add a couple of ounces of the Posi-traction additive to the rear to see if that clears up the noise.
Pull the wheels and check out the condition of all the brake parts and if everything is securily tightened down.
Check out the emerengcy brake mechanism. The springs and the suspension system.
You may be able to find the problem this way, but at least you'll be quite sure of the condition of your car when you take it to the dealer.
This whole operation should take you less than an hour to do. Good luck I hope your problem is easily found and fixed. :D
I had the same type of "clunk" in my '94 Automatic. Normal sound according to the dealer techs and I even drove other "new" C4 automatics on the lot back then when I didn't believe them and guess what? They all had the the same clunk sound when coming to stop. I wouldn't worry about it. I drove her for 7 years and traded her in with about 23K miles on it and never had a tranny problem.
Same thing happened the 3rd week I had my 00' C5 A4 took it to dealer in NYC who immediately new the sound from prior c5's. I'm not to technical but some how I backed out of the U joints in the rear end and the loose bolts allowed for small play that upon braking caused a clunking sound. Hope this helps. Sorry i could not be more specific but according to the chevy mechanic he works on 15 to 20 a year with same problem I was out in 30 min. with problem solved.
johnso26,
I had something similar to this, that I thought was coming from the rear, but in fact it was the front sway bar bushings that the dealer replaced. It happens a low speeds when the brakes are applied and also under light acceleration. Maybe worth a looksee. :)
