while getting oil change on 2003 the mechanic recomended to get the gear lube change i have 54000 miles. Of course that is money for them 150.00 for the job, any thoughts do i need to do this or not,
Very easy. If you can change your own oil you can do this. Down side is smell. When I pulled out my rear diff to get the 4.10s put in I drained it in the garage. My wife was really mad cause the garage stunk for days. Her car was also parked in the garage and it stunk inside it also.
It is a good preventitive maintenance measure. It requires 1.75 qts plus some 4.5 ounces of limited slip additive. If you use Amsoil the additive, friction modifier, is already in there.
If you have the jack and some jackstands already, you can save yourself some money. The fluid will cost you around $20-$25 bucks, plus another 5-10 bucks for ahand pump. There is a drain plug on the bottom of the diff, which uses a Torx T-55 bit. Remove the plug, plug your nose, let it drain into your catch can. Once it is done draining, clean the plug and tighten to 26ft. lbs. Use the same T-55 bit to open the fill plug, which is located on the back of the diff plat about halfway up. It has a silver tag on it stating that it is the gear lube fill location. Use the hand pump to fill the the diff until the fluid just reaches the fill hole. Tighten to 26ft lbs.
The service manual states you should take it easy for the next 300 miles while the fluid breaks in. I am not sure anyone can wait that long before the craving to hammer the throttle sets in though.
But I don't think that is is a necessary thing to do on your Vette!
I am a big advocate of changing out the factory fill diff fluid early in a car's life. I changed out the diff fluid in my 06 CTS-V at about 10k miles and submitted the fluid for analysis to Blackstone Labs. The results weren't good. Wish I had done it sooner...
The mechanic is right, however, you should have changed it 30K miles earlier. It's too easy to do and is often neglected. Two bottles of Mobile 1 Syn gear lube and one 4oz bottle of limited slip additive comes to around $22 when I do it. You'll need a pump which can be found at any auto parts store.
