Question for everyone. My car has been garaged for a while now (damn snow!) Anyway the other day the weather cleared a little so I took her out for a drive and while I was out I filled up the gas tank. I let the pump stop when it automatically stops and didn't force more fuel in. I get it back home and the weather turns again so now its not being driven again. So after being in the garage for a couple of days I start noticing the smell of gas. It is continuing to get slightly stronger. Do you think the injectors or somewhere in the fuel line I have a leak or is this common on a full tank of gas? I have noticed this before but at that time I was constantly driving the car and it didn't continue smelling, which leads me to believe it is something to do with a full tank. Just need to know if I should have it looked at or not, it is covered by the extended warranty so that isn't a problem....I just HATE taking it in to the dealer unless I absulutely positively have to!
BE CAREFUL .... Many garages have a water heater or other device in them which may have a pilot light on it. If you have gasoline fumes in the garage, they may be ignited by the pilot light on the device. If you have anything that can ignite gasoline vapors in the garage ... PARK THE CAR OUTSIDE .....
You could have a fuel leak from almost anywhere in the system, but if it seems to only occur with a full tank, I'd suspect a problem with the crossover pipe between the two tanks. If there is no fuel actually "dripping" from the car it will be difficult to track this one down. Keep us posted ....
No there is no sources of ignition in the garage, we have or hot water and furnace in the basement. I did a search and found a few other posts that sound like the same thing. Many of them were either the fuel filter or the crossover pipe or the tank itself. If it is the fuel filter would that be covered by the extended warranty or not? If not I will replace it myself. The other items should definately be covered!
Just a followup on what was found to be the problem. I took it to the dealer (warr) and they (according to ticket) found a crack on the right tank where the connecting tube connects. They replaced the tank after transfering over the sending unit from the old tank. Hope this helps someone in the future!
