Who here has passed a federal smog sniffer test with an aftermarket cam, on a stock displacement motor? Mine passes, but fairly mild (218/218 with a 114 lsa). What about a B1, or wilder?
Re: Wildest cam which passed smog testing? (6Speeder)
Most of our cams are not very radical or we just don't use them in emissions counties but I really think that the emissions "toughness" is really overstated. With a good tune, a well engineered cam and good heads, you should not have a problem passing emissions with the stock cats.
I think a lot of the problems come in when head porters take too much material out and make the port "lazy". Also, taking out the swirl vane is a bad move if you are trying to pass emissions. We also reconfigure the combustion chambers to aid in flame propagation which will help lower emissions.
Fortunately for us, hot rodding a motor should focus around upping the efficiencies of the motor. This will/should not effect emissions negatively.
I know I did not really answer your question, but hopefully I gave you an idea that the cam is not the only piece of the puzzle in passing emissions tests. :) :)
Re: Wildest cam which passed smog testing? (Chris@SpeedDemon)
Chris: You're right, the cam isn't the only thing affecting emissions compliance, but if the engine is upgraded proportionatly: intake, exhaust, heads, and cam, then the cams duration and lsa give a pretty good guide to the overall "wildness" of the motor. My question still stands, has anyone passed emissions with a larger cam? :seeya
Re: Wildest cam which passed smog testing? (6Speeder)
Well, we have 17 custom lobes that we can put together in any configuration. If you would like to experiment with them, give me a call. I will send you a cam that will make awesome power. If it does not pass, send it back and I will give you your money back. You will need custom tuning though. :)
I'm running the MTI R1 Cam.. 560/560, 232/237, 114 .. I have no idea if it will pass.. I've considered stopping in somewhere and having it tested just to be sure but I don't want to tip off the county if in fact I don't pass....

Bob: That's cool. I was beginning to wonder if anyone else had even tried to pass with a stronger cam. Glad to hear there are others out there. BTW: my setup passed a CA emissions test a while back. Still... where are all the MTI guys? I know Houston requires the federal sniffer test.
