Default Wondering if this is possible...

Can an A6 transmission be installed into a c5 and how economically sound or unsound is this (if at all possible)?

ANYTHING is possible ... it's just a matter of $$$$$$

You'd be looking at a pretty major project .... Besides the issue of getting it to fit in your drivetrain, the Automatic is controlled by the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) which also controls your engine. Your PCM can only control a 4 speed automatic, so you'd need to replace your current PCM with one from a vehicle that supports the 6 speed auto, and then get the PCM to control your LS1 engine, which would add some work to this ....

If you're really serious, I'd contact these guys and ask them if they could/would do it and at what price ...

Bump... no one has any ideas? I know that the first model year C6 used the A4 which is what had me thinking in the first place.

What are you really trying to accomplish? Better gas mileage? Or you just want an A6? If you're just looking for more gearing, you might try searching for an external overdrive unit. I know these were discussed a number of years ago, not sure if they really ever "made it."

Im not planning on doing anything as I have no money to spend on the car with the exception of gas. Its just something that is an interesting idea to discuss, imo atleast.

There is nothing to discuss .... it is a MAJOR project ..... thetaxman tells you the answer .....

As I already said in a post above, you need a new PCM to control the 6 speed automatic, BUT the new PCM uses a communication protocol called CAN (Controller Area Network), and the computers in a C5 use a different system called the Class2 Serial Bus. You'd have to find some way to either upgrade ALL the other computers in the car to CAN, or put some other computer in to act as an interface between the new PCM and the existing computers .....

Let's just put it this way ... by the time you're done with the project, you will have spent more money than a new C6 with an A6 would cost ..... stupid idea ...... nothing to discuss.

Default Because you have no money But FYI

I wont go into great detail.... the swap is done all the time... usually when there is a doner... this is just mechanical and straight forward, the PCM needs to be reprogramed. Rodney At RPM who does this all the time has several doner set up available. you can easily go either way, MN6 to A4 or the other way around.

I heard them say around $10,000 for this swap, it is not easy.

Again, anything can be done, but think about it ... you gotta replace virtually every electrical device in the car to make it CAN compatible ... but now you walk up to your car and want to open a door .... the C6 door handle arrangement is totally different ... how do you integrate that ???? ... and the keyless start ????? Like I said before ... you'll spend as much (or probably more) putting the SIX speed automatic in a C5 as a C6 costs ......

That's the price for installing an A4 in a car with an M6 ... he wants to put an A6 in from a C6 Corvette ... WAY more than $10K ....

Just does not make economic sense ...
