When I turn my corvette hard to the left or right it pops, especially when backing up.. It dosen't pop any other time except really backing up? Is there supposed to be spacers in 98 vettes? I looked under the chasis and looks like nothing is wrong idler arms look good upper and lower control arms look good, I did go with 2000 and newer style rims. any feedback would be helpfull
my 97 made a clunking sound mostly when turning and backing up- mine is a manual tranny, so it would sometimes do it if I was going slow enough in a higher gear and the car would chug...
I read a lot on the forum about different issues and mine turned out to be the axel nuts in the rear. If you do a search for axel nuts, or axel clunking you will turn up tons of info...
Basically- the half shafts from the rear go into splines at the rear wheel. if you pull the center caps on the rear tires you will see a 33MM 6 point nut (I say that as this is what you will need to buy to do the job) loosen the rim lug nuts, loosen this big nut and jack up the car- remove tire and then work on getting this nut off. You will see the splines when you take off the nut. Use penetrating oil to spray into this spline- you should be able to move the shaft back and forth (or in and out) with not a lot of force- if it is frozen, this is causing the noise. I had to use a wood block on the snout of the shaft and lightly tap the block\spline in to get it to move...that's how frozen mine were. Once you move this shaft in and out a few times and it becomes free- put that side back together and do this to the other side.
Wheel lug nut torque is 100 ft\lbs and the axel nut is 118 ft\lbs.
It cured all the noise I had. Now I am going to change the rear fluid as an added precaution...my car was a garage queen when I bought it- so I had to take care of some sitting issues on it - next are sway bar bushings...as they grown around corners, though I didn't hear them over the clunking sound!
I agree if the sound is like a clicking type sound. Those splines will indeed dry out and cause this. Now if the frame is torquing with a pop sound like going in and out of driveways, then check for loose anti-sway bar bolts. I found one had become loose on my just enough to cause a pop type sound.
the problem isn't when driving, its when I Turn steering wheel hard left or right and then it pops. Like its missing and grabbing.. it does it every time too.
