Installed Hawk pads 5000 miles ago. I've been dealing with extreme brake dust and squeal ever since. Just switched to Raybestos QS pads. Problem solved. No more noise and very little dust. I'm a happy man.
Congrats! I know what you're talking about because I just installed some Hawk's recently and they are very dirty and noisy. I was hoping the squeeks would go away sometime soon but I guess not. Oh well, I like how they perform enough to deal with it. Have you really tried out the new pads, hard breaking etc.? I'd like to know how they compare. I have read a lot of positive posts about the QS's.
Anyone running the Hawks experience anything different from our results...quieter?
I have Eradispeed rotors and Hawk street pads.. Ive had them 6 months.. about 6,000 miles.. I have no problems with the pads or the Rotors// I had some sqeaking for the first 500 miles.
C5Cemo: I had installed the Hawks with the Eradispeeds. The noise was very loud until the outer coating on the rotors wore off. Then I was left with a slight squeal that just wouldn't go away. I haven't done any rally hard braking with the QS pads yet, though they feel fine so far.
OK...I have put only 500 miles on the car since the install. Maybe they will quiet down a bit after a little more time. Unfortunately, I decided to get all new OEM rotor and they already look torn up. I should've gone with something better...
I apppreciate the added info about your experiences.
Ron- I'm not using either the Hawk pads or aftermarket rotors, but I also had an annoying squek from the rear pads. Permatex makes a anti-squeal compound that comes in a little packet at most parts stores. I just pulled the pads of & coated them with it. Let them dry & slap them back together. Costs about 3 bucks for two packs. Mine hasn't made a peep since. As for brake dust, I found the more expensive the pad, the less dust they made. I'm sure the Hawks are not cheap. I used the GM pads & dust is not that bad. SCOTT
Hey Maroon: The only reason I got the Hawks is because they were offered at half price($100) with the Eradispeeds. While I did not use anti squeal compond with the Hawks, I still would have changed them just because of the brake dust. I'd clean the wheels before I'd go to work( a 30 mile drive one way), and they would look awful by the time I'd gotten there. It was too labor intensive. I did use the anti squeal on the QS's though.
I had the Raybestos QS installed last Friday. I am AMAZED!! The dusting problem is non-existant compared to the stock pads. I can now drive 100 miles without the front wheels turning black!! Used to be they got grey daily on my 16 mile commute to and from work (that's round trip). The car is also stopping better without jiggling. I'm going to post picts of my new AC Delco DuraStop Drilled and Slotted rotors as soon as I get my CD-RW problem solved.
A question along these lines. I have 18k miles on my '01 C5 which includes 3 roadrace events, probably 300 miles of all out road racing and then several high speed autocrosses. My stock pads and rotors have held up well, the brake fluid has been cooked several times and changed once. How do I know when the brake pads are gone? I don't understand changing the brake pads if the stock ones seem to be working so well. Are aftermarket pads that much better in stopping force or what?
