I too am surprised that it's visible on a normal window though... mine has the HUD "stock", and if you lean too far to either side or sit really high in the seat (like standing up) you can't see it at all it just dissapears. Maybe it's the Zaino.
Mine dissapears as well outside of the normal HUD viewing range, I didn't claim that it was visible beyond that. My point is that the image looks clear to me when many people told me that with my non-HUD windshield it would be blurry and that I would need a HUD windshield. Regarding the Zaino I clean all of my cars with it - it doesn't actually improve the optical clarity of the windshield, but just makes sure it is clean and reflects light well.

I will see if I can compare my HUD too my friends 2002 Z06 HUD for any visible blurry differences. As I said before I'm sure that the HUD windshield is a little better and if/when I need to replace my windshield that's the one I will go with, but since it's in good shape now I'll keep it in for awhile. Also consider this - the projector reflects the image off a mirror internally and up and through the plastic cover. Is this special "high optical clarity" plastic? The image is then reflected off of the windshield to the driver. Optical clarity of glass is used more when light is passing through the glass (like in lenses), but in the case of the HUD projector the image is just reflected off of the windshield. Would it then not make sense that a good glass polish which improves the light reflection properties by adding an extra layer on the glass (but not improvong the optical clarity of the glass itself) could be beneficial to the HUD? I don't think it could hurt. ;)

Very Impressive. How much was the parts alone.
I paid a total of 600 plus shipping for the used parts from a 2000 coupe - dash with HUD bezel; HUD guage cluster; and HUD projector. Plus a few pennies in misc. mounting hardware for the projector.

A comment about the special HUD windshields: THe first GM cars to use HUD, Bonneville SSE used the special windshield, but several others, the 97 Grand Prix GTP for one did NOT use a special windshield, basically its a cost/quality/car heirarcy thing, engineering and budget people wouldn't spend the money on the less expensive car lines for the special windshield. There is a small quality difference, slightly noticible if you are picky(like me) or look especially for it, but you soon forget about it.

I agree the HUD windshield is better and that's why they used it. The observable difference to me seems very minimal - beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If I crack my windshield and need a new one, I will opt for the HUD style of course.

Very minimal, I didn't weigh the projector, but I would guess it was <5lbs for sure.

For those who are interested I was able to obtain the Part Numbers for all of the parts except the Hud Gage Cluster according to GM parts Direct it is made buy an independent company and sold to gm through (Specmo) as far as the parts go here are the P/N and Prices quoted through GM parts Direct they seem to have the best prices.
1.Display 10316475 $637.73 (projector)
2.Bezal 10425223 $10.14 (trim piece for Hud)
3.Pad Asm 10443975 $447.00 (dash)
4.Switch 12198648 $ 62.02
As you can see the parts are not cheap if any one is able to get the P/N for the Hud gage cluster please let me know. I also have the winshield P/N if any one in interested GMparts direct does not ship windshields P/N 10426714
$ 1345.13
I hope this helps Godspeed you got a hell of a deal.

an easy way to save over $400 is to use yoru existing dash and just cut a hole in for the bezel....I know some people have done it this way...

On my 1997, there is just a blank plate there (almost like they knew that something would be there...)

I cut the dash on my 99 GTP and it worked perfectly. Did it with a dremel and the dash still completely together. I will admit the first cut can be a bit nerve wracking!

Will the HUD Guage Cluster work on a 97 or 98? There could be some differences in the wiring between them and the 99 and up cars.

As I said before. White 98 did it to his 98 Vert. I know it can be done I've seen them. You should IM him and ask him if there was anything special he had to do

I think we are eager to find out exactly if it will fit the '97/98's as well.

This sounds like a real fun project.
