Default "stuck in 4th gear" what do i do??? help

well i was on my way home from my girlfriends house and coming out of first gear my "shift 1st-4th" light came on and i shifted to 4th gear and when i went to shift again it didn't come out of 4th. so i limped my way home. the car made no noise nothing strange besides the fact it doesn't want to get out of fourth. i was having heat flashes on my home and i still am as im typing this..... now what the hell happened... what could this be and how much is a rebuild and how much is a new tranny. guys any advice will help.

Thanks, Lorenz

I once had this same thing happen to me this past summer. It happened when I was at a red light and I couldn't get it out of 4th gear. I ended pushing on the shifter as hard as it took to break it lose. It came out of 4th gear with some serious pressure but I have not had a problem since.

Nothing is wrong with the tranny and it has not happened since. I pushed on the lever as hard as I could because I basically felt what did I have to lose...if the tranny was broken then nothing.

I don't know about your tranny problem ... but either you had a GREAT time with your g/f ... or you need a new one ....

With the engine OFF, can you get it out of gear ??

If not, you probably have a problem in the transmission. If you can easily get it out of 4th with the engine off, then you probably have a problem with the clutch.

even with the engine off i cant get it out of gear...... should i just try to force it out anyway???? i can move the shift **** so that it looks like is almost in neutral but it doesn't go any more.

Never heard of this problem before. But I would try a cags eliminator first and start her up. Thats probably the cheapest best mod you can even do to your car. I would just try to use alot of force to get it out and hopefully you just had the same problem as that guy above me said.

Is this a stock shifter or after market shifter? If the latter, possibly one of the shift stop bolts/nuts (HURST, KIRBAN) has fallen out into the shift mechanism?

Checked that and everything was tight.....i even took off the shifter and checked to see it was the shifter that broke maybe.

Maybe try having someone push/rock the car (both forward and back) while you are pushing the clutch pedal in and out. Might help jar it loose.

If you can't get it out of 4th with the engine off ... unfortunately you probably have a problem within the transmission.

I'd call EnglandGreen and ask if he can recommend a local shop that can help you .....

http://www.englandgreen.com

He's up in Vero Beach, I have no idea how far that is from you, if you can get the car to him, that's what I would do ..... Hopefully someone local to you can recommend a good shop .....

Best of luck,

Your 3-4 synchro keys are broken. D&D trans sells billet keys. I used them when I rebuilt the trans on my 2001 ZO6.

Russ is correct.

I have had a few customers that this has happened to. They took the opportunity to upgrade to a RPM Level IV transmission with upgraded bronze fork pads.

Give me a call to disuss.

Thanks

Stephen

Been here, done that, to the OP: Sorry but I hope you have the cash to rebuild the tranny; you have broken keys.
