Default Where does diff Leak?

Hello;

Do the side covers where they are bolted to the main housing leak? Or are leaks typically from the 1/2 shaft seals?

I'm going to put in new 1/2 shaft seals but was just curious if the side covers can be a problem and if I should re-seal them while I've got it apart.

The diff did have oil down one side and looked like it was leaking from the 1/2 shaft seal but it's hard to tell.

They leak from the output shaft seals.

A lot of people think the leaks come from the seals around the axles, but most leaks are from the o-ring seal on the housing side plates.
I think the GM procedure is now to install a new o-ring AND use a sealer after thoroughly cleaning all the fluid and dirt from the housing surface.
There is also speculation that the fluid can come from the vent on the driver side if the rear end fluid level is high or you have been running the car hard causing an increase in temperature.

I developed a leak on the drivers side after some very spirited S's. For the next few weeks the leak would come and go, not always leaving a spot on the floor but always with the gear oil smell. I was throwing fluid on the exhaust but I couldn't tell if it was from the seal or the vent. Deciding to go the easy route first, I changed out my diff fluid with Redline synthetic 75w90 gear lube. I've read on this forum that sometimes this works and it did for me, no more spots, oil smell, or damp housing. I suspect I had a sticking vent and or too much fluid since I did get a release of pressure when I drained the original fluid....

I notice a leak after doing a fluid chage on the rear drv axel ... turns out the car was not level ... so it took all 2 qts plus the 6 oz bottle of slip lock. The leak was from the vent on top....

I have a 2004 coupe with 6800 miles, I took it to the dealer today for a rearend leak. I think it is leaking between the rearend and the transmission. The service manger said he would repair it with no cost to me.

Actually, its the output shaft seals that are the common leaking area. They even put out a TSB on it:

I wouldn't mess with the housing plate sides unless you know for a fact that they are leaking.
