I dont know this for a fact but IMO with that kind of jump and IF you could get traction you should see around .6 to .8 quicker in zero to 60
(4.2 - 4.5 sec. vs 5.0 - 5.2 sec) and maybe a 13.1 sec to 13.3 in the 1/4 mile? It seems like I saw a test back in 01 on the z51 (3.15) vs. stock (2.73) and the z51 was around .3 sec. quicker? Maybe someone else that has done this swap can chime in.

From 2.73 to 3.42 is a 25% difference. This means, that at an identical RPM, your tires will be turning 25% slower, but will be producing 25% more torque. As mentioned above, you'll have better acceleration, since torque is actually what moves a car. You'll also get generally less mpg since you'll have to run at higher RPM's to do the same speeds. Less top end speed is debatable though, since our cars are not rev limited, they are drag limited. With 3.42's, you shouldn't reduce top speed at all.

You'll gain a little, but most tests I've seen have the best results coming from a torqe converter installed in conjunction with the gears. Launch also becomes more difficult as traction becomes a bigger issue. The gears themselves will improve the 1/4 a little (.3 is reasonable), but add the TC and hold on.....
For driving on the street, and general SOTP feel, gears can't be beat.
There's been quite a few discussions on this if you look back a few pages or search. I did this swap. Yes, there's a LOT of difference however a lot of the guys that went to 3.73 said it was MUCH better and advised not to bother with 3.42's.
For me, I'm happy with the 3.42's in the coupe.
BTW, you do have to retune for it or your tranny will shift with all the grace and delicacy of a sledge hammer.
You will notice a big difference in acceleration, a small loss in MPG, and little or no difference in top speed. I went from 3.15s to 3.42s with a 3500 stall and went from 31 0n the road to 28. Be sure and have the tranny reprogrammed when you change the gears. They can reset the shift points, tranny pressure, and shift time. If you are contemplating a convereter change, do it with the diff change. The labor is $100 or less with the rear end out.
I just picked up my car today after this swap from a 2.73 to my new 3.42. It is the best thing you could ever do for your car and you. It is like night and day difference......
Well worth the time and investment. It should be the gear CHEVY put in these cars from the start.
