I have a '98 and a '99..... both of which make this awful squealing until the engine gets good and hot. I played around with the A/C controls, and judging by the way the pitch and loudness of the squeal changes, i'm guessing its the A/C belt. Also, on the '98, the idler for the main serpentine is just about at the last wear index marker. A few friends with other Chevy's swear up and down about Goodyear Gator belts.... I tried getting them from AutoZone but every one they gave me was the wrong one. Any ideas, part numbers, or other recommendations?
Thanks for the advice... I'll try that part number. The '98 has a brand new idler on it. I later found out after installing it (I had this squealing problem once before) that the idler was ok.... so essentially, I have a spare idler for the '99. Thanks again for the info.
Go to www.AdvanceAutoParts.com fill in your car info, search Belts or Serpentine Belts and it will list the ones for your car, including the Gatorbacks.
Stock dampers can rust overnight when the weather is humid causing the noise you describe, once the belts wear off the thin rust layer the noise goes away. My '98 did as you describe until the stock damper was replaced with an aluminum ATI three years ago resulting in no noise since. Also, the minimal runout reduces travel of the idler pulley so the pivot arm can last longer since it doesn't have to compensate for excessive wobble. If changing belts doesn't stop the noise then the damper could be the cause if it's the stock design.
