I'm not sure what you mean by a rack. All you need is a transmission jack to get the drivetrain out as an assembly(making sure the engine is supported of course). I built a dolly out of 2x4 to rest the rear cradle on, which allowed me to lower it, and roll it right out from underneath the car.

Do you have access to a lift (2 post, 4 post?) or are you planning to do this on jack stands?

I would use two transmission jacks, one under the engine, and the other under the trans/rear. (Heavy-duty units, especially the one used under the engine)

Don't forget to tie them down to the components.

Hi Jason -

You can buy two cheap atv lifts at Harbor Frieght and just use those - one to support the front cradle and engine, the other to support the rear cradle and trans/diff .

I have never seen anyone that had posted reference to any kind of c5 chassis dolly.

I have not done what you describe, but the atv-lift idea is how I would go about it if I wanted to lift the body/frame off of the driveline.

I use one of my atv lifts to remove the rear cradle and trans/diff/torque-tube assemblies.

best regards -

there are four points under or cars (two under each cross member) where the drivetrain is supported durrig assembly. The rack i am talking about is around three feet tall and spans the two crossmembers and supports the torque tube in the middle.

Your problem is .... how are you gonna lift the body the 3 to 4 feet into the air to clear the engine/driveline ????? Remember that body is gonna weighin the neighborhood of 2000 pounds. I could see it if you have a 2-post lift ... other than that .... how ????

How about modifying or building a "motorcycle" lift (an example ... go to http://www.matcotools.com and search on part number ACM15MR1) that instead of the table on top, has arms with pins to go into the points used at the Bowling Green plant. This would make it easier to provide support to the rear of the engine once the torque tube is off, and would allow you to raise and lower the drivetrain to ease working on it. Just a thought ...

I've seen what you're talking about (dolly) but I think they were all custom made.

You might want to try and stack up some pallets under the drive train, lower the car onto the pallets and then disassemble.
