If it's a C5 ... you will get warning message on the DIC that says SERVICE TIRE MONITOR SYSTEM ..... hit the RESET key and the message will clear off the DIC. The car will post this message about once every 20 minutes or so. Annoying, but that's it.
You can order and install monitors in your race tires .... all you have to do is re-train the car to the wheels each time you change from your street to your race tires (or vice versa). Takes 2 minutes to retrain them with a magnet. Lots of track people do this.
Post what year your car is, there are two types of sensors for a C5 ... depends on what year you have.
thank you, very much for the info the vette is 1998. played at spring mountain whit street tires and now it,s time for track tires.
The TPMS for a 1998 are part number 10438853 and the nut to mount them is part number 15234846. You will need four of each and probably the best prices would be either ....
Gene at GMpartshouse.com priced the sensors for the C5 at around $37 a few weeks ago. I think the nuts were an extra $4.
I bought one for my 2004 Yukon (different part number than the Vette) from him. Lowest price I could find. My dealer wanted $65 for one of those dang things!
I still don't think I would buy them for race tires, unless you really need to monitor your tire pressure while racing.

That's the price for the 2001 thru 2004 sensors .... unfortunately the 1997 thru 2000 sensors are MUCH more expensive ... and the sensors are not interchangeable between the two types.

Gotchya... My bad!
Wow $100 per tire??? That is steep. I probably wouldn't have fixed the one bad one I had in the Yukon if it were that expensive.
It takes a tech II to turn off the RPO code in the BCM in order to eliminate the TPMS, I'm not sure if it can be done on a 97 or 98 but I do know it works on the later year C5's
BTW, if you are running bias ply drag tires in the rear and use below 24psi in them, I think most use 18-20psi max, you will get the 'Low Tire Pressure' warning even with sensors, because they are set to trigger on anything below 25psi. So even with sensors and low tire pressure you'll get warnings. Probably better to just hit reset or do away with the feature with a Tech 2 if you switch tires packages a lot. There is no way I know of to set the low pressure threshold.
So I can turn it off and keep it off on my 04? But are you just talking about the reset button every 20 minutes?
It is an option on the BCM menu, which can be turned on or off with a Tech 2. See this link for the procedure (many GM shops have the computer but don't know this trick)

Why would you want to turn off the TPMS ???? especially on a 2004, the cost of sensors is so low that it is easy to keep the system installed on multiple sets of tires.
