The car tossed the belt at 4:00 this morning. I got a new belt for it and put it on. My problem lies in that I get the belt lined up and installed all ribs are in their repective grooves. I turn the car over and the belt shifts rearward on the crank pulley and only the crank pulley just 1 rib. Every thing else remains lined up but the crank shifts 1 rib.
What the hell is wrong with this thing? As an aside it seems to be leaking a little bit of oil from the area of the crank snout. is it possible for the balancer to have shifted out?

Sounds like you need to get underneath and check it out.
Well I think I found my problem, I just loosened the crank bolt by hand.
Where do I go from here? Can I just put some lock-tite on the bolt and retighten it, a socket won't fit between the bolt and the rack, can I do it with a wrench? (I'll have to go buy the correct size.) please don't tell me I have to pull the rack to get to the bolt.

Well....here comes the bad news. If your balancer has walked out, it probably needs to be replaced. Yes you have to pull the rack, and NO, you cannot resuse the old bolt. You must buy a NEW bolt.

Unfortunate but true...upside is this didn't happen at speed on the road.

Happened to me last summer. I went ahead and changed to an underdrive pulley and actually wasnt that bad to change, just dont forget to loctite the bolt. I forgot the first time and after about a weeks driving bolt backed out.
