Default Cam ?

Hey Guys...

Can someone explain the difference (in laymans terms) between the 2000 cam and the other LS1 cams?

Thanks!

Default I actually just had a cool little course in this...

Yesterday while watching the Nascar race did anyone catch DW and the other announcer go over cams and how they work. They put it in laymans terms and I understood it so easily. Basically went over the peaks on the cams along with the curvature to the tops and how its a balancing art to not go too sharp a peak vs to much of a curve and how the heads and the other essentials have to also match the cam. You go too radical, you make more hp but hurt the longevity of the motor, or you go more mild and make less hp but improve the longevity.

so cool learning this stuff....

I would really like to know how these things work together to create power - lift/duration/timing.

Why would GM change the cam for 1 year only?

the 2000 had pup cats. they needed more cam to keep the hp rating up due to the extra flow restriction.

lift = valve open height
duration is how long the valve is open out of a 360 circle
im a little rusty on this but the numbers rated @.050 is what you want to be looking at these are the real numbers not the advertised.
also back in the day hot cams had staggered lift and duration say .472 intake .502 exhaust and lumpy cams fell into the 280 duration and upwards to 302 duration. valve is almost always open lousy idle no vacuum jm.02$ its cold out and im bored

I think that C5's came with normally 4 cats. 2 small cats up front (pup cats) just after the exhaust manifolds, then 2 larger (main) cats further down. I could be wrong and maybe this was only the case for the 2000. Iam sure someone will chime in and let us know.

C5 camshafts:
'97-'99 LS1 .479/.472 lift, 207/199 duration, 117 Lobe Separtion Angle
'00 LS1 .500/.500 lift, 209/198 duration, 115.5 LSA
'01-04 LS1 .479/.467 lift, 207/196 duration, 116 LSA
'01 LS6 .525/.525 lift, 211/204 duration, 116 LSA
'02-04 LS6 .551/.555 lift, 218/204 duration, 117.5 LSA

2000 camshaft was given more lift and duration to compensate for the inclusion of pre/pup cats on California and north eastern United States sold vettes to comply with emissions requirements. All '00 LS1s got the larger camshafts, but only those sold for delivery in California or north eastern USA, got the hp robing pre/pup cats installed. This means the non-pre/pup cat '00 C5s got some "free" additional hp!...maybe 5hp?

"01 LS1s, got the larger volume LS6 intake manifold, and better flowing, but heavier cast iron exhaust manifolds, larger MAF, and better flowing air intake box, but were then equipped with the same pre/pup cats the '00 California and NE USA sold cars got, as well as the smaller camshaft, similar to that of the 97-99 LS1. All of these changes combined for a net increase of 5hp, and 10 lbs.(auto) and 25 lbs. (manual) of torque.
