Default New engine oil consumption

I had my engine rebuilt (dealer outsourced the bottom end to speed shop, they assembled the rest) and it is using oil. I've heard that some oil use is normal during the ring seat in period. How much oil usage is normal?

here's what was done: cylinders bored 1 over with new pistons and rings, new oil pump, new rod & main bearings, new bolts, gaskets.

Engine used 1 quart the 1st day I got it back (unless the dealer did not fill properly). I topped it off and now after 1,000 miles it is just above the add marks.

I drove the car 460 miles yesterday and it didn't go below the add mark.

Gary2KC5,

Give it 4K-5K miles, though it may not take that long. I would think that if a good speed shop did the bottom end that you will have good results.

Good luck.

Default Re: New engine oil consumption (MDT)

My concern is that the dealer installed the new 13 lbs top rings and the middle Napier rings. The rings along with bad cylinder to piston clearance it the essence of the oil consumption isssue.

Since they hand fitted the pistons I'm sure the speed shop did a good job.
my really concern is with the rings, again, because I've seen posts for Z06 ring replacements that still didn't fix the blow by issues.
