I posted this issue some time ago and have some new info if anybody can tell me what should be looked at.
Unable to shift (or extremely hard to shift) into reverse while engine is running... doesn't grind but sometimes if I slam it 2-3 times it finally goes into gear.
New finding: If I hold the clutch in and push into reverse... shut the engine OFF "but keep ignition in ON position" it slips right in immediately.
This isn't the lockout solenoid right? I imagine the lockout is what keeps it from moving over to hit Reverse but not actually getting into the gear right?
Any help is appreciated as this is driving me CRAZY! At least I found that turning off the car allows me to get into reverse now!
I'm not really sure, I had assumed that the lock-out prevented it from going into Reverse not closing that "gate" on the shifter. It could very well be that it might need shimmed out somehow!
Mine's tough too, I usually slip it into 3rd and then it goes right into reverse without a problem... I plan on upgrading my tranny fluid this spring hoping that will help some.
If its easier to get in gear with engine off, I would think the clutch is not fully releasing. It still wouldnt necessarily grind, due to syncros for reverse. Thats a puzzler.

That sounds likely; clutch replacement time? I need to have the rear main seal replaced anyways so may be a good time to do it. I just wanted to make sure it's a clutch issue and not something else...
Although.. My car still rolls forward slightly in first gear (with clutch pushed in) So does this confirm the clutch? Is there an adjustment for the clutch?
6 months later you are still complaining about this ..... GO GET IT FIXED ...... whining about a clutch problem ( and providing conflicting information such as "shut the engine OFF "but keep ignition in ON position") WTF does that mean ???????
If you are going to replace the clutch, you can check the reverse gear while you have the tranny out. It is really easy to replace reverse. Shoot me a pm or email me and I can send you some pictures of whats involved. Mine was the reverse synchro, blocker ring and I had to replace the gear also. All you need is a set of snap ring and lock ring pliers, no gear puller needed for reverse.

Chill man! I dont drive it much and the weather started getting nice.. thats why I haven't spent the $1000 to fix it yet. I meant that I turned the engine off then after it stops, put back into RUN position and shift into reverse. I'm just making sure I'm replacing the right part, I dont want a $1000 mistake thats all.
Hey there,
I had the same issue with my car. I was told when I was learning about cars that 99% of shifting issues are linkage related. So.... I performed a shifter alignment. You just loosen the bolts that hold the shifter to the torque tube and center the carrier with the alignment pin and retighten, you wouldn't believe how much of a difference that makes. Try it THEN suspect other causes.

$1000. sounds cheap. I got a deal for an R&R at 500 bucks. Then add the price of the clutch, master and slave. Also, while the tranny's out, it was worth it to me to have the gearbox gone through. 500 bucks plus parts. Ended up paying 1300 bucks for the gearbox rebuild (including all of the upgrade parts such as shift fork, billet keys etc..) and with the Textralia Exoskel, I ended up with a total of about 3300 bucks. I want everything right the first time.

Good luck.
