Default Coilovers VS Springs

For those of you that have coil-overs please chim in....

What are the benefits and the disadvantages of running coil-overs rather then the mono-springs?

What does it do from a handling standpoint and what happens with comfortability while driving?

I've been running VBP extreme springs for about a year and I am just not feeling it, granite they are very stiff springs probabaly to stiff for daily driving. I have been looking at the coil-overs and would like to hear from current coil-over suspension owners on what their opinions are.

Also what's involved in the installation of it, are there custom process or custom peices needed?

^^The big advantage of coilovers is adjustability. I happen to purchase Pfadt coilovers. They allow you to adjust ride height and also bump and rebound settings which allow you to better tune suspension.

The installation is pretty straight-forward. Your remove springs and shocks and bolt-in coilovers.

A number of people have bought the Pfadt's and are very happy with them. They are a sponsoring vendor and have a website. Aaron and Robin are very helpful and easy to deal with.

Hope that helps.

I think this might be a good route to go... Sounds like coil-overs are the best of both worlds, performace and looks. What kind of market is there if I was to sell my stock springs and then the VBP race springs, for like 250 a peice?

I have some Penske shocks and turned them into coilovers. They don't fit. The tie rod hits the coil spring. My shocks are different then Pfadt coilovers, because my springs start at the bottom. Inverted shock. Now I'm back to my VB&P springs.

^^I think those prices are reasonable. I would try selling the them in the C5 parts for sale section. Might want to also try selling the VBP springs in the HPDE/autocross section.

mountainbiker2 - The coilovers on the LG Motor Sports web page look just like yours and they are supossed to fit C5s' so why don't yours fit??? (I'm in the process of converting my Penski drag Shocks to Coil Overs ALSO) Did you use the "standard" 2 1/4" coils???

Please check my post in the past about coilovers vs leafs. One day I will write a book and have my wife translate it into english, as I can't spell. I have been to war about this subject and just can't anymore.

We have been building street coilovers since 1991 just for Corvettes. And racing on coilovers since at least 1974.

Steve there is a high dollar suspension peice that you can buy to make this work, I will have to dug up were we got them from. Most kits today run the 2.25 inch springs due to this and a couple other issues.

Randy / DRM - RE C5 Coil Overs - Please chime in here and let us know the "clearance" needed between the shock and the tie rod for the coil??? Apparently this dimension must be pretty tight!! The difference between the LGM & The Pfatt coils are subtle at best! A 2 1/4" coil ID should be about a 3 1/8" OD +/-. What is the OD on the DRM coil overs, and which type of shock do you guys use??

Any info. will be greatly appreciated!!

I also have the PFADT coil overs and couldn't be happier. Car is pretty low and I still want to go lower but the ride is soooo smooth and controlled. And the adjustability of ride height and dampening is great. I can make my car ride smooth on the streets and stiffen it up for the canyon runs and only takes about 3 minutes to make the adjustments to all 4 shocks. No more wheel hop, brake dive or rear squat.

The tie rod on my car is from VB&P. They are 1/4" longer then stock. I took off my tie rod and moved it 1/4" toward the tire. Now the length is just like stock. I lowered the car and it still hits. My car is not even at the right ride height. It just came off the jack. If I was to drive it around it would have hit more due to the a-arm angle. If anyone knows how to fix it, let me know before I send the 2 1/4" springs back.

thanks,
Steve

The guys at Pratt and Miller had or have a option. I looked at my cost back in 99. I almost fell out of my chair. I don't know if they are still building them or not. But we used them on a racecar build back then.
The part had a large u shape around the coil spring.

JR,
Our Hyperco spring measures at 3.300 at it's widest free width. Bilstein shocks of course!!!
I don't know the rule of thumb on the coil to tie rod clearance. The only way of really knowning is trial and error. We did all that fun stuff back in 97 or 98. Yes our first test run had issues with guess what, the rear tie rod. Then we moved some things and tried a few other things and it worked!!!!!!!

DRM Coilovers are awesome! I run them in my personal car, Grond, and on my customers cars. My customers LOVE them - and so do I

We are now running the lowest cars on the Corvette Forum. This is Slammed!!!

See pics of the DRM shortened and revalved coilovers versus their normal height coilovers.

Stephen,
It's funny, Steve here in MN has to come to our shop for oil changes. Nobody will even change his oil, because the car is so low. That car rides very nice down the road, but not that great in the ruff stuff.
Stephen, How the heck are you anyways??? You look pretty busy down there in the nice weather.

Hi Randy,

I'm good, thanks. I've been busy doing a lot of Whiplash cam installs.
