Default Engine Block Question

Ok, I should have asked this with my manifold question, but....

I was told my my tuner that my 01 vert is one of the 01's that used the LS6 block and manifold in it. Is there any way I can tell by looking at it, or any visible identifying marks on the manifold or VIN number that could tell me for sure?

Yes, look on the passenger side by the water pump and along the front edge of the passenger side cylinder head. On the top edge of the block there will be some bullseye marks about the size of a nickel if you have an LS1 block. If it is an LS6 block there will be no bullseye. All 01+ came with the LS6 manifold standard.

I understood that all 01' used the LS6 block too. Also that there really is no difference between LS1 and LS6 block. Is this not true?

There are differences between blocks. I believe the LS6 had windows cast in the cylinders for better scavenging, etc.

Net effect though, was that there is no power difference between blocks.

Not all 01's got them, and power wise it doesn't matter either way. The LS6 has the cast in windows at the bottom of the cylinder for better bay to bay breathing, a revised valley for the PCV system, and that's basically it.

Go look up Idahoe Corvette, and then when you get to their website, go the section dealing with the LS1 / LS6, Ruthless pursuit of power.
