I have a very strong urge to put a set of 4.10's in my A4. I think it should be ok, because with the exception of first gear, all of the gears are evenly spaced including overdrive. According to my calculations this should give me a top speed around 170 at 6200rpm. Cruising at 70 should be around 2528rpm which is fine with me. WWC says that the 3.90's will improve my 1/4 mile time by 1 full second coming from 2.73's so the 4.10's should be even better. I am not sure if I should do a torque converter because traction problems and i will be running street tires, but i definitely want to get the transgo shift kit. What do you think of this idea? What are your sugestions? Do you think this will work?
i will wait as long and do whatever it takes to get them. How fast is a stock A4 with 2.73 in the quater mile anyway? I have not had a chance to go to the track and test it out yet.
My 99 A4, 2.73 was running 13.8 in 100 degree weather completely stock. With just MTI ram air, thermostat and programmer, and 65 degree weather, i got it down to 13.07. (and with N20 100shot...12.007)...
and you still want to dive into an overhauled unit. I would thing you would be better with 3.90 in an A4. Slicks would still be a big necessity in first gear.
Depends alot too on the engine, stock, all bore, stroker, etc...
With the torque these engines have, I really think anything past a 3:42 for the Automatic, and 3:73 for the MN6 would create massive traction problems, and would make first gear somewhat useless. This is just an opinion, but that's what you asked for.
Traction is a problem with any ratio my friend. I know a dude who put a set in his A4 SS and he has not lost from a light yet! He has a few mods with a stock converter and transgo it is absoulutly sickning how he pulls away from me. Let us know if you do bud!
I should have the 4.10 gears the middle of Janurary. The price will be $1495.00 exchange. There will be alimited # avaiable at first. Give me a call to put in your order.
with all seriousness what would happen if i put the 4.10's in with the stock converter? what mods does your friend have on his SS? Thanks for your help.
I think i will really like the gears bc i was reading on another forum where the f-body guys were using them and getting good results in the 1/4 mile. So with the weight advantage that my car has over them i should have very strong acceleration even with a basically stock engine. Plus, 2528 rpm is not bad for 70 mph, and the 171 top speed does not hurt either. I might run a cam later to alow me to raise the rev limiter to 6800 for longer gears and a higher top speed.
