Default Repairing Transmission

Ok, I have an 02 Z06 and while I was at the drags on Saturday on my second run I shifted into 4th gear and it stuck. Took a lot of force to get it out of gear. From what I've found out it might be the shift pads or the keys so I'm upgrading to bronze pads and billet keys. While I have the transmission out what else would you guys recommend replacing/upgrading? Hoping to do a h/c mod in the near future so I want the transmission to be able to handle it.

Thanks,
Franklin

should be fine with that. unless you see anyother visual damage. for some reason those stock keys cause alot of trouble.

I had that same problem with mine last week at the track. It would only happen in 4th after a full run up to redline; it would start slipping (clutch?) and would not come out of 4th. From what I could tell from posts here, it is a clutch thing, but it feels like transmission to me. Is doing the pads and keys a DIY project or do you let someone else do it. I wouldn't mind doing mine just to rule out the transmission. Sorry for the hi-jack.

Thanks.

By check them I mean inspect them for damage or excessive wear.

What you are talking about is dropping tranny and disassembling - right? Is there no way to check them without doing that?

Sublime -
Are you sure that is what your problem is, or are you just going ahead and repl anyway?

I have asked a few shops and they all say the same thing that it's probably the keys or the pads so that's what I'm going to replace. I'm going to do the work myself, the hardest part should just be getting the tranny outta the car. And going to check the synchro's and such for damage as well.

Thanks for the feedback!!

Also one more question. Do the cars come with a steel shift fork for 3-4? One shop said probably the other wasn't sure.

From what I have found out, they changed to steel forks sometime in 2003. Unless yours has been changed, it is probably aluminum. The steel repl is given anytime the tranny is out. Hope this helps.

I think the pads fall off the forks, there was a tsb covering this and if under warr. GM will fix

I really haven't seen anyone dive into the M6/12's and post

RPM is the shop to deal with if your going to sub out the work

I had a similar problem about a month ago - stuck in 4th gear.
It ended up that I had a broken syncro and a snapped ring.

Well I ordered the steel fork, the pads, and the billet keys. Hope they get here for the weekend and will try diving into it then. I'll take pix and make a post of how everything is going and some of the issues I come across. Hopefully everything goes ok!!!!

I have been in and out of these things more then a few times. If you have all the tools needed, it makes life easier, but it is still one of the hardest manual transmissions to rebuild. It has even more parts then the typical T56.

Having it stuck in 4th or reverse are the most common. Reverse is actually more common then 4th.

To get 1st thru 4 off you will need a gear puller. I have mine apart currently waiting on a backordered reverse gear. My 1st thru 4 were fine so I didn't take them apart.

you can download the manual here to see what is involved.

http://www.ttcautomotive.com/English...ice_Manual.pdf

You will also need some lock ring pliers and some snap ring pliers. A small punch to get a pin out of one of the shift forks. And a torx bit I forget the size but I twisted 2 of them trying to get the 2 torx head bolts on the outside of the tranny loose.

There is a vendor that sells a special puller but I don't think they are a sponser. pm for vendors name.

Hey man,

I am not trying to discourage tinkering.....but....

When I was a tech for Ford, I had access to all the shop tools. My beater car was an 86 Aerostar 5 speed (hard to imagine a stick minivan!). It was a 22 minute job to pull the tranny. After 200K miles I was in and out of that thing pretty regularly (saving money, not time). Bottom line, there are wrenches that are super thin to hold things still while you turn others. There are clearances that might look ok to you but actually have too much slop, causing things to stick or to pop out of gear.

IMHO, you are running one of the finest engineered American sports cars of all time. You have 40K plus in a car, its worth the time and money to do it right the first time. Pull the tranny yourself, mail it off to Rodney and get it done right the first time. Return your few parts that you ordered and be done with it.

I would hate to see you post in this thread when its 78 and sunny in a few weeks with questions about how some cadmium plated prawl spring carrier was busted and you need a spare (its an old harley reference, they had different carriers that cause Sportsters to pop in and out of gear).

My unsolicited .25. Not doing the job twice is worth a fortune to me these days....

HTH,
Cassidy

You really want to think long and hard about doing a tranny rebuild yourself .....

If you have the GM supplied Service Manual for the car; go to the MM6 section and you'll notice that it shows you how to remove and replace the tranny, and how to do some external things such as replace the reverse lockout solenoid, but there are NO instructions for doing a transmission rebuild.

Even for a dealer or other service shops, they don't rebuild trannies, they swap them for a "rebuilt" or "remanufactured" tranny.

If you've rebuilt other trannies, then the Corvette gearbox is doable. If this is your first "rebuild" I'd STRONGLY agree with the above post and ship the tranny to Rodney for them to do it for you.
