OK, I searched before I posted this. Nothing specific found...well, some possibilities.
Anyway, my 2001 Vert (6spd) has an annoying rattle when I go over small bumps in the road. It's got less than 50K on it. I've asked the dealer to check it a couple of times, for bad bushings or the like. They can't seem to find anything.
Ideas? Shocks? Rattle seems to be coming from the left rear quarter.
"Bierbelly": (Great nickname) Not to alarm you, but there was a thread a few days ago about a C5 that had the rear subassembly that holds the suspension come apart from the frame. Caused a crash, fortunately nobody was injured. The thread included photos that would be very useful to show a technician.
It appeared that a weld had not adequately penetrated to the frame.
IIRC, the owner was hearing a noise and the techs were unable to track anything down. It they had been looking for that specific malady they would have found it.
Do a search, or perhaps someone remembers the thread and can direct you there.
See if the small plastic handle on the emergency fuel filler door release is tapping on the stucture - that is right behind your head and to the left when you are driving.
The fuel filler door release mechanism lives back there too - and the cable may have come loose from it's guide clips.
I hope it is something like that and not anything serious!
Found the post I earlier referred to. Also a 2001 car. Read the description in the first post, and there are links to photos in a later response from the OP.
Thanks for the input guys. Sure hope it's not a broken/missing weld. To me, it sounds like a worn bushing, but I had the dealer check those (they said). Is it obvious when they are worn out, or is it something they might have missed. The fuel filler release ought to be easy enough to check out.
I had the same problem. It was the sway bar links. I couldn't believe it, but less than one turn with the wrench to tighten the links and the noise went away. The noise really was both embarrassing and worrisome

Hope this simple fix works for you too.

Very good to know! Will file away for future reference.
I've had the rear upper control arm bolts back out on me two times. Extremely odd. Loctite corrected the problem.
My smyptoms were fairly obvious when each failure occured. When I'd apply throttle the car would wiggle all over the road. Totally didn't feel like the car I know and love.
Might try getting under there with a light and looking at every piece very carefully. Might catch something the techs missed.
Simply dry rear sway bar bushings can make noise, most notably at slower speeds as there can be more suspension movement.
Leave the end links bolted up, unbolt the sway bar at the bushings. Remove the bushings from the bar and smear some Mobile 1 synthetic grease (pink stuff in a tub) inside them and reinstall.
