I posted a few days ago regarding a transmission issue, and thanks to those who chimed in. I figured I would report back as to my status. I ended up taking my 01 C5 automatic back to the dealer. After some going around in circles they finally agrred that there was a problem. To make a long story short they want to replace the trans, which is great exept for the fact that the extended warranty co. wants to do a refurbished/rebuilt trans. which is not something I really like the idea of.
Here the situation I am thinking about though.....the warranty repair is covered up to about $2,600 My thought is after looking at some reviews here and pricing I found I can get a RPM level VI trans for $2,000. I feel the best choice is obvious, but would like to get feedback from members here. Here is my estimated cost breakdowns.
Refurbished/rebuilt
$200 deductable
$175 new fluids
Total cost to me = $375-$400
RPM
+2,600 for repair paid to me
-$2000 for trans
-$175 fluids
-Chevy install costs $800 ???????
-Shipping???????? (anyone have any ideas to Virginia)
Etimated total: $375-$400 + shipping costs
I assume the RPM trans that everyone uses in the one located in Indiana? Interesting once I did the math.......crap VS quality for almost the same price.
You know the answer to this already; Rodney is . Why not give him a call if you have any $$ concerns? Would the warranty company authorize him to do the work (road trip )?
If you can get the car there, it may be worth the trip. I had a unique problem on mine where it wouldn't go into 6th gear and as a result they were able to pull my transmission out rebuild it with all of thier normal upgrades for MUCH cheaper than I could have bought a stage IV and done it myself.
they let me hang around in the garage and look over thier shoulders and I can say I was VERY impressed with the knowledge and quality of work.
I needed 5th and 6th gears, all new synchros, all thier normal upgrades (hardened fork on one of them and a steel insert in the other) and the bronze fork pads which brought it up to a stage IV plus the bronze pads. I was out of there spending $1500, and they put my clutch in, and changed my diff fluid. I supplied the clutch parts.
The car has never shifted better, no regrets at all
No road trip, the trans is in bad shape according to the dealer, I live in VA so a 800+ mile road trip to Indiana is out of the question. From what other memebers have said about these transmissions I feel I can trust them to ship a quality unit and it work the first time. I did give them a call a few minutes ago and shipping is only 175 and they pay the shipping back on the core, price wise I see only one option as far as quality. The only thing I would need is a new Tq convertor. The dealer install cost shouldn't be to bad as RPM said the trans is already assembled and ready to bolt in, just add fluid and go.
Just wanted to give another update. I finally got my car back today and here is what I eneded up with. I ended up having to go with a factory unit total replacement with a 3 yr 100,000 mile warranty. I really wanted an RPM replacement, but was unable to to do so due to the warranty co. I eneded up paying $200 total so it was not to bad of a deal. Thanks to all the forum members that chimed in.
