Fans not coming on? Coolant not pumping though? a little throttle may get the coolant to flow better

When are your fans coming on or set for?

my cars oil temp. gets to 230 in traffic on a regular basis. nothing wrong with that. the coolant goes up there, but then the fans kick on and it goes down to 210 or so.

Ok, Here is what I found or didn"t find....I checked the coolant level and it was fine.....Checked the top and bottom hoses the top one got hot fairly quickly the bottom took a while and than it got hot at about 200 degrees on the temp gauge....Took off the fuse and relay cover for the fans checked fuses all ok....Waited to see if the fans would come on in low and they did at around 226 degrees and the temp went right back down....So then I removed the low fan relay and let the car heat up to like I think 236 degrees to wait and see if the high fan relay would turn them on and it did.....But only the passenger side fan went to high speed and the driver side one stayed off....Is this normal for only one fan to run in high speed????? Anyways now it looks like everything is working....This is driving me crazy........So now the Question is that is this a ground problem.....Or is this a thermostat problem....Or is it a radiator problem.....By the way thanks for all of your help.....

The "low fan" relay (Relay 45) also is the HIGH speed relay for the LEFT cooling fan ... so it is "normal" for the fan not to run with the relay removed.

In LOW speed mode, the two fans are powered through RELAY 45 in a serial configuration. That is they are both trying to run off a single 12 volt feed, so each fan runs in LOW speed (each fan is only getting 6 volts of power). When Relay 44 kicks the fans to HIGH speed mode, Relay 45 feeds one fan 12 volts and Relay 43 feeds the other fan 12 volts, so each runs in HIGH speed mode.

Post again if you feel there is a problem......

Ok, Black ZO6 the relays are in series and without the one relay in the low temp one I see that it could not complete the circuit so you are right....The fans come on in low at 226 degrees and in high at 236....So now I did infact check the cooling level and its fine.....I cannot get it to go to 240 again so I am assuming that it is either the thermostat getting stuck or it is the raidiator....Would that be correct.

The part of your description that "stood out" for me was when you described that raising engine RPM to 2000 would allow the engine to cool. Just "feels" like a coolant circulation problem ... the fans are OK, the radiator fins are clean, there is plenty of coolant, you say it has a new water pump ....

Set the DIC to display the coolant temperature, and see what readings it gives you. For example, you say the car is running "about 200" normally, but you'll probably see on the DIC it is more like 196 .... and pretty constant at cruise. Use that to get a more "accurate" idea of you temperatures ....

No its 200 to 210 on the dic when im cruising.....But im just going to replace the thermostat see if that helps if not the raidiator is next.....Thanks for everyones help........I will keep everyone posted......Also I like to mention that everyone that keeps saying that there cars are running like 180 to 190 I dont think that you are running a stock t-stat because it would never open at that low of temp nor are your fans set to stock settings.........

For reference, 02 Z06, stock thermostat

- 185-195 while cruising
- 190-205 while sitting in traffic with AC on (low fan speed mode)
- 220-235 while in traffic/idling without AC on

Joey P. i have the same problem. i changed my colent, i don't know why, and ever since the temperature is between 199-202 while cruising and it goes as high as 216 when stopping at the red light. i have never been to a traffic yet, think god as i live in cali, but i think it night go as up as 230 or so. who knows. i put in 160 thermo stat and the cruising tem was 175-180. but again, when i would stop at the red light, it will go back up to 210 or so. i don't think its normal. i am thinking about getting a programmer to start fans at 200. my fan don't seems to work either. let me know when you finally fix the car.
