HIDs are the brightest and are just barely more effort than a bulb swap.
They are so bright, that I adjusted mine slightly up and use them as headlights. I've went past a bunch of cops (plus I live across the street from the police station) and none of them have looked at me twice.
Ditto on the 885's. The one problem I've found with them is the stock 899's are rated at 1,000 Hour life and the 885's are listed at 200 Hours. A significant difference but I rationalize that the 30%+ increase in output makes up for it, even if they burn out sooner.

i am wondering if the extra expense for the after market hid are worth the extra effort?

Ain't nothing worth it once you see a HID light. Those stock light looks like **** compared to a HID bulb. Plus, the stock fogs are HID housings so they are actually made for HID bulbs.
How much effort was it to mount the boxes on the HID installs? There isn't too much room in that area and I'm wondering if it is a PIA??
It's only a pain if you try and do it with the headlight assembly in the car. If you remove the headlights, you got enough room for Rosie O'Donald to take a bubble bath in there. Look at the picture below (don't pay any attention to the captions, they were for something else).
You can see that I had plenty room to mount my ballast and then some.
