In the Owner's Manual for my '02, it specifies Dexron III fluid auto trans fluid for the manual trans. Pennzoil or any other name brand fluid will work fine.
I have used Pennzoil products in my street cars and race motors for years. Never had a problem.
Red Line will work, but their stuff is pricey. Unless you push the car hard (autocross or track days) then a good brand name Dexron III fluid is fine. Mobil-1 has a good synthetic fluid if you want to go that way.

Pennzoil is the supplier for GM's Syncromesh so GMSyncromesh = Pennzoil Syncromesh. It's quite good stuff. I have used Pennzoil Syncromesh in at least six of my vehicles and it has improved shifting in every case. In many cases it resolved some very slight gear chatter when changing gear (syncro noise?) Not sure how it will work in the T56 as GM recommends ATF, however others have used MTF in C5 trannys and haven't reported any issues..
