Default inspected rattle...found this

So my FRC has had a rattle when I decelerate, or accelerate and I finally got tired of it. I drove up on some ramps and looked under the car, found the rattle, fixed it (missing exhaust bolt before the cats), but while I was under I took a look around and found this:

Now I know there should be some kind of dust guard over the flywheel. No way is it supposed to just be open to the elements. Right? I had a dust guard on my 2k SS.

This too:

This isnt factory is it? Looks like the wire was spliced into, then ran to the top of the oil filter "thing" to get temperature. I'm assuming that is what the sensor is reading. It looks like a GM temp sensor. There's RTV at the top of the sensor where the wires go in it at, so I thought it might be added by the previous owner.

I thought these were suspicious so I wanted to share to make sure. I'm almost 100% positive the flywheel should be covered, but what about the sensor for the oil? That normal or some Mod C5 owners do to relocate the Temp sensor?

Thanks
Jon

The missing piece you speak of is:

Cover, trans Part# (LH)12559501

the retaining screw for it is:

Screw, M6x1X20mm (RH & LH-side) 10077361

Before you say "But it's not on the transmission", don't worry. That's the GM nomenclature listed for the small sheet metal cover that's missing on your 2000. BTW, there's also another "cover" (different part number) over on the passenger side too and uses the same part number screw to retain it.

As to the wire splice, my guess would be that the original connector may have been damaged somehow and the original owner replaced the connector. The silicone of which you speak is also probably something also added by the previous owner.

You're also right about that sensor being the oil temp sensor and no that is not a mod. That is the factory location.

Thats what I figured. I'll go by the parts department at the local chev dealer tomorrow to get those covers.

I know the previous owner had LT's on the car, so maybe when they were installing them they broke that sensor or the wires melted on the LT's. Either way it looks shady so I'll price that out too.

Thanks

Or better yet, call 1-800-234-5284 (Fichtner Chev) and ask for Bob in parts. Much cheaper prices. Just tell him you're a forum member.

Here's a shot of my passenger side cover.

And an illustration from the manual.

Ah, I see yours is plastic Ed. I think the earlier versions were stamped sheet metal. I did notice a different part number for the '97-'99 cars vs '00 and up.

Ya I remember them on my SS when I took the tranny out to put in my Textralia clutch.

I'll check the prices at local GM parts and if there expensive then I'll call Bob to compare.

Thanks for the info.

Ya both sides were gone. I got the screws for them, they had those in stock, but not the plastic covers. No biggie, just worried me at first because I have been driving in the rain and I know water has gotten in there. That cant be good! I have no idea why the previous owner would leave those off. Thats just stupid.

Hard to say. Might have been the previous owner or maybe a "shop" he took the car to.

I've seen this kind of thing more times than I can count. The explanation usually falls into the category of:

a.) "Aw, screw it. This thing ain't necessary", or
b.) "F**k it. It ain't MY car", or
c.) "Huh. Wonder what these extra parts are for?"
d.) All, or a combination of, the above.

alright so when I got these in today and went to install them, I noticed the holes werent threaded. Now that makes me assume the ones that came on the car were the metal ones that probably pushed into the holes. Anyone have a picture of the metal ones? I inspected the area and even ran some metal wire in the hole to feel for threads and there are non. Do they still make the metal covers for C5's or is that part obsolete and now replaced with the plastic ones? I dont want to "make it fit" if you know what I mean. Thanks
