I have a 1997 C-5 and Im getting ready for cam install. I have a comp cam ,228-230 588-592 112 lsa, LS-2 timing chain (just bought not here yet), patriot gold spring kit, Comp Hi-tech pushrods, LS-6 intake, all gaskets, new crank bolt and getting ready to buy a new oil pump.
Ive done the install before but was so scared of the o-ring issue I didnt replace the pump. This was in my last LS-1. Now, I decided Im going to give the pump a try. Looking for advice or anything to calm my nerves.
I dont want to chicken out and not do the pump again. My car has 37K, should I do the pump?
Just did a cam swap in my 2000 and replaced the oil pump. Not hard to do. The pickup tube pops right out. You have to be careful when removing and reinstalling the bolt, but not that hard. Good luck.
Be sure to prelube and center up the pump by using shim stock(.002 )on both side, and check top and bottom, then tighten the pump down.
Take a die grinder and clean up the pump, they are a bunch of how to links out there.
i didnt buy a new front seal when i did mine, and paid the price. lost 4 quarts in 20 minutes. Buy a new front seal for 10 bucks. and be sure to use the best RTV for the bottom of the front cover.

did you buy a LS6 ported oil pump?
I have a new seal already and havent bought a pump yet. Any suggestions?
Did you get a new oil pump o-ring? I'm not sure that any of the pumps come with them. The new one from GM is blue in color and is a bit thicker than the stock one they were including in earlier year model cars. The blue one being thicker is less prone to pinch when putting in the pickup tube.
Just put a good coating of oil on the o-ring before putting it in, and the pickup tube should go in without issue.
Dont get a meling oil pump or a "high pressure" oil pump, just get a OEM LS6 pump, I ported my own pump and added a VERY small shim under the spring which got me overall 3-4 psi gain over all rpms. You dont have to shim or port it I just did cause I am a huge DIY'er. The pickup tube is easy to get into the pump just place a rag over the hole in the oil pan under the bolt hole before installing the bolt so if you drop it it will not go into the pan.
P.s. use RED locktite on ALL bolts minus the oil pan bolts (blue locktite)
Absolutely replace the pickup tube o-ring with a brand new one and be super careful when you attach the pump to the pickup. I failed to do this when I R&R'ed the pump to put a cam in and my #7 intake lifter will not pump up.
Now I have to rip it all out again to replace the o-ring. Thinking of shimming it ~.050" while I have it out.
