In my search for a modded vette I forgot about the smog issue. I am in the SF Bay Area & am wondering about a forged 402 with a 220/224 .581 & 115LSA cam. A&A S/C as well. I do have to get the stock cats welded back as well. Am I going to have a problem trying to get this to pass the sniffer? I figure the visual I can call around my buds & see what mod friendly places they have gone to, but I need it to pass the actual test though.
May have to pass on the Vette if it may be a potential problem.
The seller is required to get a current smog test for the car before they sell it to you (within the last 90 days) .... if the car doesn't pass ... walk away from the deal. My guess - you'll be walking .....

The only problem is the guy is out of state. I believe from Seatle. I would think I m responsible for smog? Not sure if a mild tune would do it. may be too much of a risk to buy it & then try to get it smogged.

Yes, if you buy the car from out of state you are responsible for the smog test. Not a good idea buying a modified car from out of state ... if you can't get it to pass smog .... you're screwed.
The method of testing varies by county in CA as well. I tried to have a car smogged in Santa Barbara County that was registerred in Ventura County. They could not do it because SB uses the tail pipe test, where VC is more of a rolling dyno tester.
With no cats it won't pass. I'm not saying it won't pass with some tweaking though. Andy had a couple blown 402 C5s at A&A in Oxnard, CA.
You may have a car you can't register right away though. Could always road trip it to Andy at A&A, they could make it pass for you.
Looks like it may not be worth the trouble to buy this vette with the hopes it would pass smog. I will just have to look for a California seller instead.
