Yes the column needs to be lubricated. My truck does this on certain occassions. I had the dealer lube it once and now the noise is back. Not sure what needs to lubed exactly.
I would think it would be where the actual wheel mounts to the column.

suggest you perform a search / archieves
could be from inside cabin on firewall there is a seal, that can cause this condition. need to grease with can of lithium grease / skinny applicator
