I'm starting to think about replacing wagon wheels on 1999 cpe with new chrome rims (have not purchased or selected yet). Well known internet wheel supplier cautioned me yesterday that run-flat tires cannot be re-mounted since sidewalls become stretched and damaged. This just doesn't sound right to me. Bascially told me "you get one shot at mounting a run-flat"
Anyone have the real story or have personal experience. The tires are original Goodyear Eagles with 17K miles and never removed from OEM rims. If I have to buy new tires with the rims I will probably forget the whole idea until tires wear out.
Also, somewhat apprehensive about forum tech talk regarding replica wheels. Safe to go that way or any other suggestions for a nice looking chrome wheel under 1500/set?
Thanks guys

Reason: spelling
My RFs had about 26,000 miles of wear on them and were on the car for 3 1/2 years when I bought new tires and switched to non-runflats. I watched the the tire change and the RFs came off the rims without any issues or damage. They looked like they could have gone right back on.
Run Flats can still get a puncture and can be repaired - they just run with zero pressure until you can get the car to a shop - ask you wheel guy how they repair a run flat without removing it.
I know for sure you don't want to put a plug in a Z rated tire - you have to do a patch from the inside.
Sounds like BS to me.
What do have to loose. Put the RFs on the new rims and if they don't work out you can always buy new tires. In a pinch you can find some pretty good buys on used tires in the parts section.
Whoever at that "well known internet wheel supplier" told you a run flat cannot be re-mounted is either lying to you in the hopes of selling you tires ... or a complete idiot ..... or maybe both.

However, the more pertinent concern may be the fact that your tires are nine years old. Tires do age, regardless of miles, and can suffer dry rot, get hard, etc., none of which is conducive to safe, performance driving.
As to your question regarding replicas, I'm not a big fan of them; they're typically heavier and usually not as good quality as OEM. That having been said, there are nonetheless plenty of people here who run replicas and are perfectly happy with them. Since the product is an unknown quantity however, you at a minimum need to make sure to buy from a good, customer friendly retailer.
