I couldn't get a reply on the C3 General Form and I hope someone here can help. When we were test driving my car for a buyer, he mentioned he was coasting but the engine was still at 2500 rpm. He tapped the gas pedal but it (rpm) wouldn't come down. Finally it did but stuck again. I have the stock 71 carb. I think it is a Rochester. I inspected the throttle linkage and it looks like the throttle return spring isn't pulling the linkage back to the idle stop. The spring seems okay so perhaps the throttle rod that goes through the base of the carb is sticking for some reason. I also noticed fuel seeping from around the throttle rod or shaft. It is seeping on the choke side (other end of the same rod) of the carb as well. Do ya'll think a carb rebuild is in order? The car has been sitting a great deal for the last three years and not driven much at all. What should I have done?

Thanks Gents!
It sounds like the carb shgould be rebuilt and looked thru. Im sure the float or floats are taking gas as well. Not un usual though. You might also have to have a double return spring.

I'm not even sure why I'm answering this considering I have not had to rebuild a Q-Jet in 20 years. Yes, rebuild the carb. Rebuild kits are cheap. Make sure you soak it in carb cleaner for a good long time, rinse well, and blow out with clean compressed air. Consult your service manual for all initial settings, and give her a whirl.
