Re: How often should we replace our fuel filters? (Vinzvette)
I replaced mine at 20,000 miles. Just be sure you have the proper tool to take it off. I didnt, as a result I broke the fuel line. $300 for the new line and more than that to have the new fuel line's installed. :(
The filter has a regulator built in with it as one unit and runs $54 at the dealership.
Re: How often should we replace our fuel filters? (Shinobi's97)
I got this from the Tech Tips area:
Fuel Filter Change
- Relieve the pressure in the fuel line at the rail.
- Disconnect the battery
- Raise the drivers side rear of the car
- IF you have an A4 space it tight and it helps if you remove the catback portion of the exhaust on the drivers side.
- The filter is just up under the frame in front of the drivers side rear wheel
- Remove the bolt holding the filter assembly to the frame
- This is where it gets messy... Remove the two quick connect fittings towards the rear of the filter, just squeeze the blueish colored tabs and pull the two lines from the rear side of the filter. DO NOT be right under this - a couple of cups of gas will come pouring out - trust me I got soaked...
- Using the fuel-line disconnect tool, remove the line on the front side of the filter. This is tight, I was worried about snapping the line when I did mine but it will come out... Again, some gas will pour out and remember the filter itself is full. You MUST use the fuel-line disconnect tool here. Its a little plastic ring with a cutout and tail that slide between the connector on the line and the hard tab on the filter. Same tool is used if you ever remove the line from the fuel rail...
- Clean up all of the fuel that went everywhere
- Put the new filter in place and bolt it down.
- Reconnect the lines.
- Reconnect the battery
- Turn the key in the ignition to pressurize the lines but do not start. Do this two or three times.
- Check for leaks
- Replace the catback if you remove.
- Lower the rear of the car.
- Take it for a spin
If it was easier to do I'd change mine every 3 months.
Re: How often should we replace our fuel filters? (vetterdstr)
I would say only 99% correct, one small correction that I can see (no offense) do not just raise the drivers side of the car you need to jack the car from the rear cross member. There was a bulletin about jacking at the individual jack points on the C5 saying never to do it (all that after I had done it once or twice) so that is it.
Thanks for the information, I am going to change my filter this weekend.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm gonna add a note to my personal maintenace proceedure page... better safe tha sorry :yesnod:

C5Cemo-
I couldn't find that in Tech Tips - do you have a link? Also, do you have any information on where to find the fuel-line disconnect tool (brand, part#)?
Re: How often should we replace our fuel filters? (George Cooper)
Hey George- I got my Fuel and Transmission Line Disconnect Tool Set at my local auto parts store, it is made by Performance Tech, P/N:W89330...beautiful anodized pieces. The one for the job is 5/16". FYI, they're not the A/C line disconnect tools...
Hmmm...I just checked the Tech Tips and, sure enough, it's not there anymore like you said. I'll go and add it...wish I could remember the original poster so as to reference him.
Re: How often should we replace our fuel filters? (C5Cemo)
I just realized I have a picture that shows the fuel filter...it was taken when my tranny was last rebuilt. You can see it on the driver's side frame rail...
Re: How often should we replace our fuel filters? (C5Cemo)
I changed mine without a special tool. Just a flat-bladed screwdriver strategically placed did the job :D Is there a difference between a '97 and the newer vettes in the filters??
Re: How often should we replace our fuel filters? (MikeyD)
Yes, since the '99 and up cars have the regulator built-in to the filter it is a different design -there are two pipes on the front side and one on the back. Still the same proceedure roughly for changing it, though.
I assume the '97-98 has just one pipe on each side, correct?
