Default CLB installation

Hey guys my name is Robert and im new to the forums. I just picked up my Black 99 FRC with 17,000 miles on it. The first thing i did was check out the forums. I saw info about the CLB, and i ordered the piece that night. This installation looks kinda difficult and i dont wanna mess anything up. I am stationed at Eglin AFB, FL and was wondering if there was anyone on here that is close by that has installed one of these before that could help me out. Any help would be great.

Thanks Robert

Congrats on the new ride! You might want to check with the person you bought from and ask if they had the recall work done.

Seriously, if you're even remotely mechanically adept, you can do it! Not much harder than hooking up a stereo/tv system.

Figure an hour beginning to end. That's about what it took me the first time. On my 2nd Vette several years later, it took maybe 30 min., beers included. Really, it's not hard. First time I did mine, I thought it was insane to pull apart the lower knee panel/front of the dash. In reality, it's just a slab of plastic held in by clips and screws. Have no fear! The toughest part is if you've got a bad back or weigh 400lbs, it might be hard to bend over and reach under the steering column to unhook the old wires and install the little resistor that comes with the CLB kit.

Of course, you could always offer up some beers and invite some local forum members to help out!

well i got it from covette warehouse in Dallas TX. they probably dont even know if the previous owner did it and considering it is a 99 and it had 14,500 miles when i picked it up from the dealership, im guessing they didnt do it.

You could request a GM service history report and find out what GM has done to the car in it's lifetime.
It only requires the VIN to search the GM database. There are several members here who routinely do that search (Gene Culley, sponge vette) or you can inquire with any service writer at a GM dealership.
Do not confuse this with a CARFAX report when you ask for the data...

thanks yea it was pretty easy.. but i do have a ? in about id say the last 15-20 starts about three times it has said pull key out and wait ten seconds. it also did this twice in the last 2 weeks b4 i installed the CLB. i know for sure i dont hear the column lock clicking over like it did b4 i installed the CLB.
Do u guys think it could just be the palet on the key being dirty or is this something i need to worry about???

Can't hurt to try cleaning the metal wire on the key pellet. If you have two keys, try using the other one for awhile and see what happens.

Did you ever find out if the car had the dealer recall for the column lock issue?

Might look here to see similar issues.

I always turn on the ignition and wait for all the gages to go through their swing mode before firing up the engine. Seems to work well, and I do think if you put the key in and instantly hit the starter if could upset the system sometimes.

The reason I asked if it had the recall by the dealer is because some guys who have had the K-harness installed (via the recall) have had issues with the system failing.
