I have a question for those of you who have installed this shifter. When the shifter assembly is out of the car shouldn't you be able to move the handle around as if it were in the car? I hold the base with one hand and try to move the handle with the other and I can't budge the thing. It's like it's welded in neutral or something. Is there some kind of lock holding it in postion until you install it in the car?
Thanks guys.
If you acquired your C6/Z06 shifter as an entire assembly, including the box beneath (ala Gene Culley from GMPARTSHOUSE), the chances are that there is an alignment pin installed.
It's the L shaped knurled pin at the front end of the shifter. Normally, it'll be found resting in the slot at the front of the assembly.
If it's in the down position, it's to hold the shifter in neutral alignment during R&R. If you pull up or remove the alignment pin, the lever should just flop around.
Don't lose that pin, it'll help in maintaining neutral alignment should you need to R&R again in the future.
There's numerous past discussions on the installation of the C6/Z06 oem shifter with images...
Thanks hotwheels. The shifter is new but from a fellow member with out instructions. I kind of thought that pin looked suspicious in the front but rather than start playing around with it I thought I'd ask someone who knows.
I have bookmarked Patches install tutorial to make sure everything goes smoothly.

His is the most complete with the images. It's an easy job even for a first time DIY project. The hardest part is the removal of the center console and finding all of the TORX screws. You might stuff some towels around the top of the torque tube so you don't lose any parts/tools down there.
I elected not to disconnect all of the switches/wires on the console and carefully lay the console off to the passenger side with my R&R.
Use some blue LOCTITE on the four 1/4-20" fasteners and torque to spec... http://www.eliteengineeringusa.com/C5_Torque_Values.pdf
