Do tire sensors need reprogramming when swapping rims?
I am swapping my high polished rims and tires from my 2001 with a set magnesium rims and tires off another 2001. The dealer is telling me my sensors will need reprogramming and will cost an additional $35 per car to have it done because they reprogram the computer! Is this right??

For $35? :bs
Follow this link for instructions on retraining the sensors. I think it
is in your manual as well. As for the "J41760 Tire Pressure Monitor
(TPM) System Programming Tool", go to Radio Shack and pick up a
"U" shaped magnet that will fit around the valve stem.

Lane:
The guy at the dealer is either stupid or is BS'ing you! The computer does NOT have to be reprogramed. It is a simple matter to reprogram the SENSORS. Here is the procedure straight from the Service Manual:
1. With the car stationary for at least 2 min. Turn the igition to ON.
2. Press the RESET button in order to clear any IPC display warning messages.
3. Press and release the OPTIONS button on the DIC to scroll through the display options until the IPC display is blank.
4. Press and hold the DIC RESET button for 3 Seconds.
5. Press the OPTIONS button again until the TIRE TRAINING message appears.
6. Press the RESET button until the IPC LEARN L FRONT TIRE message appears in order to begin the programming sequence.
7. Hold a strong magnet as close to the left front valve stem (touching the wheel if possible)
8. The horn will sound, indicating the left front TPM sensor is programmed.
9. When the horn sounds, porceed to program the next TPM sensor in the following order as ddirected by the messages.
...LEARN R FRONT TIRE
...LEARN R REAR TIRE
...LEARN L REAR TIRE
If you have any problems, let me know and I'll try to help. :) :)
Re: Do tire sensors need reprogramming when swapping rims? (rocketrider2)
Thanks for the replies everyone. I knew the computer didn't need to be bothered to do this. I guess my basic question is should any relearn be needed. I figured the system would just detect the new sensors and go from there, but yeah if the have to be re-set I will do it myself. Thanks
Re: Do tire sensors need reprogramming when swapping rims? (rocketrider2)
if your swapping out your sensors along with your wheels and tires
then they'll have to be programmed. if you're keeping your original
sensors you won't as long as the sensors are returned to their
same positions on the car, ie ( LF-RF-RR-LR).
Re: Do tire sensors need reprogramming when swapping rims? (ROCKnROLL)
I've retrained my computer / sensors dozens of times. It takes all of 2 minutes with virtually ANY magnet you can find. No need to get anythign special. I just use a parts retrieval tool that I have in my toolbox. Go to tire sensor training on the DIC, hold the magnet next to the wheel that the DIC indicates, wait for the horn to beep, go to next wheel.. Seriously, 2 minutes with any magnet... Extremely simple job..
