today I fired up the beast (after dark), turned on the headlights... and pulled out... shortly after, I noticed I have no backlighting behind the gauges... whats really wierd, is if i shut off the engine, and then restart it, the backlighting illuminates for a few seconds... i guess to show the operator that the bulbs are all working... so this condition goes for the lighting all over the dash including radio and hvac panel. DIC is illuminated and working 100%. Has my light sensor (above the DIC buttons) crapped out? or is this some sort of night-rider function that i stumbled into? HUD running brilliant as ever, good thing for that.
oh and you know the little adjustable dial on the left hand side of the intstrument cluster, well turning it all the way to the right clicks on the interior light, but the rest of the travel of this dial wasn't doing anyhting... isn't this pot for gauge light intensity? maybe this little sweet heart crapped out.
Try turning the headlamp switch on and off a few times. You've probably got a bad contact inside. Bill Curlee has a nice post and pics of how to fix it yourself.
Sometimes the little search engine works for me... My '99 has started doing the same thing. I can drive with the headlights on for a while, and then finally the gauge lights will pop on. If you open the door with the engine off, the lights come on without any problem. That lead me to suspect the headlight switch. I'll go look for Bill's write up too.
last night I fixed it. Thanks to MIKER's tutorial (Thanks a lot)- it took me about an hour... could have been faster but i did it in the dark with a trouble-light and carefully took my time. here's the link to MIKER's informative tutorial including photo's. Thanks again MIKER.
just as he said, I tweaked the contact base to give it more tension on the contact, and because the contacts were blackened i gave them a quick abrasive cleaning with some fine sandpaper... Good to go.
I'm having this exact problem right now... And after seeing Miker's writeup and talking with Bill Curlee, I'm actually excited to go home and rip up my steering column to fix this bugger!
