I have a 1998 corvette. it isn't a Z06 but when i am turning off the traction controll and hold down on the button for about 10 seconds the dash display changes to "competative driving" has anyone ever heard of this and what exactly does it do to the performance of the car?

this also verifies that your 1998 has the Active Handling optional system.
It strikes me as curious as to why you would hold down the button for 10 seconds if you didn't know you had the competitive driving option. You can download an owner's manual for free right here on the forum. Try search.
haha... hold the active handling button down for 10 seconds you'll enter competitive driving mode, if you hold your owner's manual for 10 seconds you'll be able to read about it. Competitive driving mode means traction control feature is OFF, active handling is ON. active handling operates single caliper braking to regain control. ie. reduce chance of losing control from oversteering... traction control brakes a spinning rear wheel. I have read that competitive driving mode is meant for when you take your car to the track.
If you RIGHT click on the following link you will get a pop-up box. Select "Save Target As ....." and you can download your Owner's Manual to your computer. It is a .pdf (Adobe Reader) file. Should open in your browser.
