Default Rear Brake replacement

Guys:
Thanks so much for helping with my water pump replacement. I saved lots of bucks, and the job was fairly simple. Anyway, it’s been a long time since I've replaced brake pads, and I've never done this on my Corvette. I found a great post with procedures on how to replace the front pads; however. I can't find anything on rear brake pad replacement. Is the procedure the same? One post on rotor replacement stated that once the caliper retainers are remover, they have to be replaced. Is this true? Also I'm not sure how the parking brake works. I'm assuming the parking brake is in a small drum inside the rotor similar to the Silverado.. Any help would be much appreciated.

If all you are replacing is the pads, no need to worry about the parking brake as it is inside the rotor (it is a small drum brake inside the rotor).

The removal/replacement of the rear pads is identical to the front pads. Undo the UPPER caliper pin bolt, swing caliper down using lower pin as the pivot point. Replace the pads. Press caliper piston(s) back into caliper. Swing caliper back into place and replace upper caliper bolt.

There is "discussion" on whether or not you need to actually "replace" the caliper pin bolts that you remove......

One theory is that since the Service Manual says you should, and GM includes a new boly in their pad kits, you should change them.

The other theory is that since the bolts have not been stretched, that cleaning them and then applying Loctite to the bolts is safe.

I replace the bolts .... if you are getting non-GM pads the bolts can be ordered ...

GM part number 14067559

Order 4 if doing all 4 calipers - the bolts are the same front/rear.

Does anyone use the anti-squeal goop any more, or do the shims that come on the pads take care of the squeal?

Default Use the old bolts clean the threads and re-RED LOCKTITE them

While you are at it if you take the caliper brackets off readjust the star wheels to have the parking break JUST TOUCH the inside surface of the rear rotors. My PB didn't work for YEARS and now it can stop the car dead. Also a good time to spend $12 on a duplicolor caliper brush on paint kit and make it look like a Z06. Might need a BIG HAMMER to initially get the rear rotors off. Look on here for how to do it. I posted about 2 years ago and there are lots of other posts on here too. BIGHANK
