Rear Brake replacement
Thanks so much for helping recently with the water pump replacement procedures. I accomplished this in about and hour and save enough money to afford gas :-) Anyway it's been a while since I've replaced my own brake pads, and never have I done this on my Corvette. I saw a few good posts on front brake pad replacement, but couldn’t find anything on the rear. Is the procedure about the same? One post on rotor replacement stated that the caliper retainers have to be replaced when removed. Is this true? Also I couldn't find anything on checking and possibly replacing the emergency brake pads or shoes. I'd appreciate any help you can offer.
There are two bolts that hold the inner caliper bracket to the car, and the caliper also holds the rotor, so taking those two bolts (14mm?) will allow you to remove the rotor (e-brake must be dis-engaged) and caliper together.
However to change the rear brake pads you only need to remove the outer part of the caliper and the two bolts that hold it. I don't think the bolts/rubber boot needs to be replaced on that bolt unless the rubber comes apart/crumbles. I'd just lube it and make sure it moves and doesn't bind..
If you are concerned about the outer bolts/boots needing replacement, then just remove the entire caliper as one peice. Then you can also easly pull the rotor and inspect the e-brake setup.
From there, if your e-brake is two tight or loose you can adjust the wheel cylinder for the e-brake (works like a drum brake).
and yes the pad changing procedure is about the same in the rear as the front, until you pull the rotor, and then the only difference is the e-brake setup inside the rotor.
