Default Brake pad/rotor part numbers???

Okay, I’m confused about brake part numbers. Someone straighten me out here please.

So I look up the numbers in my parts catalog and get the following (from gmpartshouse.com):

Brake pads
12530688 rear, $59.40
12530681 front, $90.35

Rotors
10445856 right front, $58.36
10445857 left front, $58.36

Then I go to rockauto.com and look the parts up, and I get this:

Brake pads
18038571 rear $46
18038570 front $46

Rotors: all $28
88925547 RF
88925548 LF
88925550 RR
88925549 LR

Interesting….different part numbers. But now, I go back to gmpartshouse.com with the Rock Auto part numbers, and I get this:

Brake pads
18038571 pad kit $46.74
18038570 pad kit $46.74

Rotor
88925548 $25.55

So gmpartshouse has the part numbers rockauto claims are for the Vette at about the same price??? What is going on here? Is Rock Auto right/wrong? What’s the difference between these different part numbers for what may be the same thing? Is this the Corvette tax straight from GM? Any insight anyone could give me on this would be much appreciated!

I noticed that the gmpartshouse.com left and right rotors have different part numbers, and RockAuto.com has separate part numbers too; is there a difference between the left side and right side rotors?
And while we're on the subject of rotors, are the rotors different between a z51 and a non-z51 Vette?
Thanks in advance .

The rotors are directional vained, so yes each side is different. When you take them off and put the new ones on make sure they are the correct ones...

Personally I just get my rotors from the local NAPA for about $25 each.

Don't even try and figure out the GM parts system ... it will drive you CRAZY .....

I'll give you an example .... there are 3 sets (at least) of spark plug wires available for our engines from GM ....

The black "stock" wires
The red "GMPP" wires
The red "Z06" wires

and just the red wires ..... look at these prices ........

89017270 kit is $106.82
12495519 kit is $65.71

What the heck .... then GM wonders why Toyota is eating their lunch.

I'd recommend you get rotors from Napa Auto parts ... the price is right and the quality is as good as the GM rotors.

Brake pads are a much more important choice ..... that is where the REAL difference in braking performance lies ..... if you like the "stock" pads from GM as the car came from the factory, get those .... (front pads are 12530681, rear pads are 12530688).

Other pad numbers are obviously different ..... they may be pads that will fit our calipers, but the pad material is formulated for a different vehicle (The Pontiac Grand Prix GXP uses the same calipers as the C5 Corvette ... so the pads would fit our car .... but the pad material is formulated for a car that weighs at least 1000 pounds more than our car). Unless you know (or a GM parts specialist can verify) that a certain GM part is for the Corvette ... I would stay away from stuff that simply "fits".

What you don't understand is that I'm selling you the OEM rotors and pads. GM has a less expensive, or what I call economy set of rotors and pads and those are the other part numbers. I sell them for much less than the OEM's.

I sold a ton of the less expensive one's previously. I should probably put them on the list again.

If anyone wants to cut down on the brake dust, go with ceramic pads. I got the Z06 ceramic pads and the brake dust has been reduced considerably. It also seems easier to clean too .

May is just around the corner too; just in time for me to get a set of rotors .

Sorry, but the Z06 pads are a semi-metallic pad .... there are no ceramic pads for a Z06 ... ceramic pads are not a "performance pad".

Just to give you an example .... here are the part numbers for the front pad kits ....

88952008 .... Z06 pads
12530681 .... stock C5 pads
88909667 .... ceramic pads

The Z06 pads dust quite a bit ... the stock pads are moderate dust .... and the ceramics are a "low" dust (plus the color of the pad material is lighter so what dust there is is less noticeable (depending on your understanding of the meaning of the word is is .... )

Well I guess I stand corrected .

I was told to ask the service tech at the dealership for the Z06 ceramic brake pads, and that's what I thought I was getting. They must be ceramic pads at least because the dusting is definitely way down.
So what ceramic pad do you think they installed on my Vette ? Are these ceramic pads for any C5?

The only difference between the Z06 brakes and the "stock" C5 brakes are as follows ...

* The color of the calipers (Z06 painted red ... the "stock" are painted black)

* The brake pad material

The bottom line, in my feeble mind, is as follows ....

* The base Corvette brake system is EXCELLENT ....
* For "street use" the stock pads are excellent ... they start to suffer fade when subject to "unusual" brake use such as coming down a VERY steep grade for a long distance, or repeated blasts to a high speed, followed by heavy brake applications.
* The ceramic pads work well for "regular" street use, and provide a low dust solution for those who are not looking for the "ultimate" performance pad.
*Choose the pad material that best suits what you are trying to accomplish ..... if you want a low dust solution the GM ceramic pads are an excelllent solution ..... will they perform as well as a "race" pad ??? ... actually for street driving they may well outperform a "race" pad as a race pad needs a lot of heat in the rotors and pads before it starts to "work" ....

If the ceramic pads you have now are meeting your goals ... low dust ... low noise ... good performance ... I say you bought the right product .... just make a note from the invoise what part number you bought so you can order them again when they wear out (which any pad will eventually do)
