The dreaded "Service Column Lock" came up today. I took it to a local dealer only to find the "recall" on my 2000 A4, was done in 2002. At that time, the first recall, they did not make it so the steering wheel would turn with the key out.
They showed me that there are 3 different bulletins regarding the "fix". Since mine was done under the first "fix" , GM will not honor the updated recall and fix it correctly.
The dealer said GM's liability ended at the first recall. Being that it is not fixed is not GMs problem.
The dealer is correct ..... GM ended the recall campaign on 2/29 of this year. Any column lock issues are the reponsibility of the vehicle owner, just like any other problem on the car.
Buy a Column Lock Bypass from Corvettes of Houston and install that ....
same thing happen to me last night the car has 80 thou on it i figured it had been fixed guess i was wrong .i was able to get the car in the driveway then i had the wait 10 seconds and pull the key and then it wouldnt start so i visted the sticky and today i pulled the #25 fuse while the key was on for a few seconds and the car started the wheel is free it just will not go over 2 mph so i ordered the bypass today I HOPE THIS WILL FIX IT ....anybody have that 2mph problem ?

The "2 MPH problem" is because the BCM is telling the PCM your column is locked, even though the BCM commanded it to unlock. The PCM is programmed to shut off the fuel injectors at 2 MPH so you cannot drive the car with a locked column. The locked column is the problem, the fuel shut-off is normal behaviour.

thank you ...so the bypass should be my fix i bought it today so i hope to have it installed for the weekend
My 2000 C5 got towed tonight and it had the recall done to it twice already... we paid for the last one... now it said "service steering column" and the steering column wasnt locked but it still wouldnt go over 2mph without shutting off. Had it towed once more and now I'm wondering whether theres a true fix for this problem or not.
Is there anything that they can do other than the steering column lock plate that was put in with the second recall? I need to be able to go over 2mph even when it has these problems.
Did they not do the recall right or whats going on? I dont understand how they can do the recall and then still have it cut off at the 2mph.
the column lock issue is unfortunately a standard c5 problem.there have been several recall fixes (at least two) but none have permanently done the trick. installing a column lock bypass corrects the problem so far. the problem is the gymnastics you must do to reset the system completely before installing the column lock bypass. it can not be in the fuel shut off condition when the clb is installed. above you will find a stickie that will address this problem more thoroughly and the fix. sometimes, removing fuses and waiting helps but i don't remember which fuses. they are, however, in the stickie. search for clb will catch stuff not in the stickie.
i haven't installed my clb yet but i got it from corvettes of huston (a forum vendor) for $50 and i am rolling the dice procrastinating the install. usuallly, everything i touch to fix turns into
good luck and for those of you the are ok but have not considered the clb, consider i tand don't be like me!
