Default cooling fan questions

I did a search but found nothing on this.

I'm hearing what i think is a cooling fan going out. Sounds like a squeeky bearing. I had something similar happen on a Camaro.
Has anyone else had this happen and where is the best place to get one?

Thanks

I had a dealer replace one on my Impala (they only have one), believe it was like $385.

Make sure it is not a belt or idler/tensioner pulley.

Could also be an alternator, see http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=2004700

What makes you think it is a fan ??? The fans are electric, and only run once your coolant temperature reaches 226 dgrees (assuming a tuner has not reprogrammed your fans) ..... they probably spin (free wheel) as you drive down the road, but I'd bet it would be hard to hear them.

More likely it is something being driven by your serpentine belt. Can you hear the squeak when you first start the engine in the morning ?? If yes .... it's the belt or something driven by it (alternator, water pump, idler, tensioner, power steering pump).

I hear it sometimes when I shut the car off and it sounds like a fan slowing down but making some noise

Maybe you're hearing the Corvette "death rattle" ???

Try this ....

start engine ..... keep clutch pedal to the floor (doesn't matter about gear .... neutral is easiest) turn engine off .... no rattle .....

start engine ..... release the clutch after starting (so you must be in neutral) wait a couple of seconds and turn engine off ..... you hear the rattle ????

If so, normal behaviour for a Z06, nothing to worry about .... it is the drivetrain (the flywheel/clutch/prop shaft/tranny) coming to a stop and making noise as the various parts try to stop at different rates. By holding the clutch to the floor the drivetrain stops turniing at its own rate, and the engine stops at its own rate. Some people turn the car off one way, others the other ... either way makes no difference to reliability ... it is just noise.

If you still think it is a fan .... run car so coolant is at least 185 degrees and make sure the A/C is on. If you open the hood, you will see the fans will be running in LOW speed mode ..... do they sound OK ??

Have a second person turn off the engine and listen/watch the fans spin down .... do they sound OK ??

Let us know what you find.
